I dunno, I paid $8K for my 73.5 in 1991..........Put some in it, not much....Since is has the S Trim and Recaro seats, I'm thinking I won't lose too much?

Paid $2K for my one owner 1969 911T about 5 yrs ago.....Needs interior, paint and a few rust repairs. Runs good. Shouldn't loose too much on that one either?

I dunno about this. You have to buy the right car. Porsches top model of a given generation always seems to appreciate in value whereas he 924s, 944s, 912s, don't have the same fate. Interestingly, the 914s if they are well kept have started to climb in value... Never saw that coming.

If you bought a 73 Carrera RS 14 years ago, you would have seen a 10X increase in value.

How about a pre 74 911S? These have appreciated about 5X over the last 10 years.

934s are in a similar boat.

I sold part of my portfolio to buy my 76 930 because I am banking that it will appreciate in value better than the stock market over the next 5-10 years.

Serves 'em right. A hamburger may cost ya a million bucks, it may taste better than Fillet Mingon, but it's still a hamburger.

Having an aftermarket industry pumping out entire clone cars doesn't help at all either..

I think it depends on which Porsche model you buy. My wife's 1987 930 cost us $24,500, had to do a clutch and a valve job and sold it after 12 years for $29,500. My 914 race car was $6,000, had 3 engines and three trans overhauls in 10 years and I sold it for $20,000. Averaged 6 or 7 races a year. My daughter's 914 cost us $4,000, had one engine replaced in 12 years (won a Parade class championship) and was sole for $3,500 (I think?). Sure miss the race car........

I have always done pretty well on my "investments" with Porsche cars. It helps that I do all the labor myself. I have had multiple 914 cars, a 1986 944, a 1980 928, and my last one, a 1987 Carrera. I didn't make any money on the Carrera. I spent a butt load on that car. 3.4 twin plug...etc. etc. But I built it for me not ever having expected to sell it. I have to add that I didn't lose any money on that one either. :D

I've had five 911s. The only one that cost me money was the last one... and that was my fault for missing a shift on the track. Even so, I think the net cost was around $1500 over the several years I owned it.

Can you give more details? Seems unusual to turn a profit on a garden variety corvette........smellin bs or dumb luck here.

A good rule of thumb.......when a seller uses the word "rare" then you know it will be a good investment.

rare does not always mean sought after though

Your bud wanted to unload his vette. You still like your car.

RANDY P 02-07-2013 09:09 PM

To stomach doing this you have to enjoy what you have- why else would you "risk" investment capital on something so flaky in value?

All it takes is the latest rage TV show to come and go and that will cause the values to go crazy..... What you really need is a buddy in hollywood to give you a "heads up" on the next car TV show.

Buy when it's not-- sell when it's hot.

So? I wanted to unload my 911S...I like my Mustang. It did a great job of taking my wife and I where we wanted to go today, and back home. Great wipers, defroster, sound system, and comfortable seats. Did so better than the old garage queen (fair weather driven only) ever could have.

To stay on topic..all cars cost money. Some depreciate faster than others. Others retain their value. A VERY FEW actually gain in value, but that gain is very little when you add up the full cost of ownership. Yes, there is a "Porsche tax"...in higher insurance, much higher parts, higher labor rates for P-car mechanics, etc.

Evidently, the Porsche image isn't worth as much to you as it once was. Boy, do I ever understand that!

I can't add any more to the:

Cars generally are bad investments
If you want an investment, buy an investment grade car.

And those that so sink money in a car, like myself, it's an emotional investment having value to me and me alone.

This.

Enjoy them all the same, but I'm irrational like that.

choose well.....

356, 73 RSs, MFI Carreras, 917s, 962s, 935s, 934s, 914-6s, early 930s, 964 Cup Cars..... any of these have proven very shrewd investments...

vonsmog 02-08-2013 04:50 AM

I have owned 20 Porsche's, three 356's two 914's and the rest 911's. I have turned a profit on everyone! But then again I can fix or restore anything on them myself, so that makes a big difference. I am sure I would have lost if I was paying someone to do the work. Most of the ones I would buy were sold to me at a lose from the seller, who was over their head on repairing it.

I'm on Porsche #8 and have made money on every one. But your point is key - I do all of my own work. If I didn't enjoy wrenching I would lose my ass because I'm too picky, the car would constantly be in the shop.
