New 2010 Boxter owner question on oil level indicator

We just got our "new to us" 2010 Boxster. Great car. But after I changed the oil, all 8 qts of it, I tried to check the oil via the dash indicator. Well when I got the computer to show the oil level indicator, all it would do is tell me the engine had to be at an idle to measure oil level. So I did that, but then it told me the engine was not up to running temperature. So I let it run for a while until it got to temperature, still nothing. So, HELP, what was i doing wrong? And shouldn't I be able to check oil level without letting the engine run for a long time and maybe damage the engine due to low oil?
HELP a new Boxster owner.
