Undercoating Removal

I want to clean up the brackets for the fuel pump on my Vanagon.

The undercoating is asphaltic and hard - likely 1/4 century old.

any good solvents? I'll use limonene ("orange oil") unless anyone tells me so & so is much better...

I have used a heat gun and putty knife to remove under coating.

I would start with the least harsh method, and gradually work up to the method that works best.

I might try a very high pressure power washer with an adjustable pressure setting for example.

thanks folks - but these are small pieces - 2 fuel pump brackets & they fit in a tin can

rusnak 02-14-2013 07:27 PM

oh, well then fill said tin can with diesel, and let them soak?

liquid nitrogen and hammer and chisel.

+1. The diesel method works well on small parts. Let soak and clean with a plastic putty knife and bristle brush. On larger parts the heat gun and putty knife method works well but are very time consuming. For interior floor plans the dry ice method is preferred.
