need tires for kong- GMC dually
 

My 2001 GMC 4X4 diesel dually will need new shoes soon. Tire size is 215/85 x 16. Currently running some off brand that came on the truck I believe Ameritech or something like that. Looked on Tire Rack , Discount Tire and National Tire/Battery and it seems like a fair amount of tires in the 125.00 - 150.00 each range. Want to stay with load range E and highway tread pattern. So what are you guys using on these tanks ? :D

Not a dually but I have Michelin LTX on my 3/4 ton.

That's the incorrect tire for your truck. Look on the tire pressure sticker in the door jamb. The correct tire size is LT245/75-16E. The 215/85 you have one there now is the same overall diameter, so it works. And 215s are cheaper which is likely why they were chosen last time.

BUT the 215s have a 2680lb rating and the 245s have a 3042lb rating. So multiplied by six tires, you're losing 2172 lbs of load capacity/margin.

The wider tire will also squirm a lot less for safer handling and better stability.

I've had great luck with the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor, and the Michelin LTX M/S. I currently have the Kumho KL78s and they're much more aggressive so they're noisier and use more fuel, but seem to be wearing nicely.

Michelins aren't the cheapest.... But they'll outlast the truck.....

The tire pressure sticker on the door says 215/85 x 16.

My 2004 also takes 215 85 16 , on the truck, and on the tag.

I've been getting very good tread life/duty with BFG.

Sorry guys, my mistake. All of my tire suppliers, including Tire Rack, show a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 DRW 4x4 with a LT245/75-16E and no other choices given.

I'd still pick the 245s given the reasons outlined above. Same overall diameter, just wider, and more overall volume give it greater load carrying capacity.

I had the 245s on my 2000 (old body style) Crew Dually 454 4x4, and that was on the door as well.

I bought BFGs through Walmart, had them shipped to the local store and at the time had mounting and balancing for free. Well my dually would not fit in their lift so they had to use jacks and then they were too big for the balancing machine and had to take them to a truck service center to do the balancing! No cost!

Good luck with Goodyear Silent Armor Wranglers here as well. Also had a pretty decent price point in my size/load requirements.

Michelin LTX are on my Silverado. I had a set last close to 80k miles. I'm not driving the truck 45k miles a year any longer and the set of LTX's on that have lasted 41k miles so far might actually age-ut not wear out.

When I bought the last set I laughed to myself that I might take the cheapass tires that comes on my next truck and put the LTX tires on the new.

Not going to buy a new truck any time soon untill I get back in to the workforce.
