i fooled around with various magnets. even a wooden ruler in front of my current magnetic knife holder renders it useless. how powerful of a magnet do you think this is.? i like it. my holder sometimes will tarnish my blades. this version wouldnt..

maybe he routered a trench and glued in a powerful magnet..love to see the backside.

Strong magnets buried in the wood. The metal backplane looks like it's just for mounting, while the actual magnets are set in to the wood piece.

Looks awesome, though, and would definitely make a great decoration piece and conversation starter.

Next hard drive that goes bad take it apart and get the magnets. They make great stud finders in drywall.

I bought an ikea (~$15) except offset and thinner. Works good as well.

Rare earth type magnets are seriously mighty.
GF bought some for making gifts. Much smaller than a mint at ~.25". From about 10-12 inches away horizontally, the stack would suck one off the table.

the knives all look like stainless. All the stainless I've ever messed with was non magnetic.:confused:

Low end stainless steel has enough iron in it to stick to a magnet, Good stainless should not.

Most 300 series stainless steel in non-magnetic because of the nickel content.
Most stainless cutlery is made of 400 series stainless which has chromium added, but no/low nickel content.

Nickel is magnetic aka ferromagnetic (pure nickel will stick to a magnet just fine). It really isn't that simple:

Look carefully at the picture and you can see a line near the front; he sliced off a thin piece of wood, drilled holes almost through that piece, epoxied the rare earth magnets in place and then glued the wood back together. The magnets probably are only a 32 of an inch or less from the face.

In the description is mentioned that the magnets are inserted into the wood, fully hidden.
