Knife Holder / Teak & Black Steel by furnishedmodern on Etsy

$85??!!..

i fooled around with various magnets. even a wooden ruler in front of my current magnetic knife holder renders it useless. how powerful of a magnet do you think this is.? i like it. my holder sometimes will tarnish my blades. this version wouldnt..

maybe he routered a trench and glued in a powerful magnet..love to see the backside.

Probably rare earth magnets.

herr_oberst 02-18-2013 01:03 PM

router + mortise + rare earth = 85 bucks!

Wrong thread, Cliffy... wait...:D

Strong magnets buried in the wood. The metal backplane looks like it's just for mounting, while the actual magnets are set in to the wood piece.

Looks awesome, though, and would definitely make a great decoration piece and conversation starter.

Neodymium magnets?

Next hard drive that goes bad take it apart and get the magnets. They make great stud finders in drywall.

BlueSkyJaunte 02-18-2013 04:12 PM

Yes. And he did a crappy job putting it together.

gshase 02-18-2013 04:32 PM

Has to be Neo.

scottmandue 02-18-2013 04:36 PM

Great... now you got me thinking... now have to look for neodymium magnets

These guys are great: K&J Magnetics - Strong Neodymium Magnets, Rare Earth Magnets

I bought an ikea (~$15) except offset and thinner. Works good as well.

Rare earth type magnets are seriously mighty.
GF bought some for making gifts. Much smaller than a mint at ~.25". From about 10-12 inches away horizontally, the stack would suck one off the table.

the knives all look like stainless. All the stainless I've ever messed with was non magnetic.

gshase 02-18-2013 07:33 PM

Low end stainless steel has enough iron in it to stick to a magnet, Good stainless should not.

944Larry 02-18-2013 07:44 PM

wouldn't a knife be made of the good stuff?

Most 300 series stainless steel in non-magnetic because of the nickel content.
Most stainless cutlery is made of 400 series stainless which has chromium added, but no/low nickel content.

I have a magnetic knife block........thought it was really neat and then I discovered the magic of ceramic kitchen knives......

Nickel is magnetic aka ferromagnetic (pure nickel will stick to a magnet just fine). It really isn't that simple:

I like a wooden knife block. Sticking my knives to the wall just doesn't seem safe.

You can buy these on Amazon now, much cheaper than $85, in multiple wood finishes.

Vash,

Look carefully at the picture and you can see a line near the front; he sliced off a thin piece of wood, drilled holes almost through that piece, epoxied the rare earth magnets in place and then glued the wood back together. The magnets probably are only a 32 of an inch or less from the face.

Holger 09-25-2014 03:07 AM

In the description is mentioned that the magnets are inserted into the wood, fully hidden.

Quote:

The magnets are very strong and completely concealed within the wood, running continuously through the inside.
