Has Lance tainted everything???
I can't help but feel that the actions of Lance Armstrong have tainted just about every elite athlete or event.
So for instance, when I see "someone" like Hussein Bolt devastate the opposition I can't help but feel there's something fishy going on. Is Serena Williams "too good"? She dominates and destroys her opposition. I don't think I've ever seen another player do that like she does! I'm not saying Hussein or Serena are using drugs but there's always that nagging feeling I can't ignore. I'll get past it but still you have to ask yourself the question. How many elite athletes active right now or from the past have got away with using performance enhancing drugs? When Ben Johnson got caught it basically "spoilt" those particular Olympics and he paid for that big time. There's a major story right now in Australia about wide spread drug use at the top levels of sport of our athletes. There's a Government sponsored investigation going on and there's talk of organised crime involvement. |

HA, just wait until they start testing NFL players.....lol

Lance is the current poster boy but he can hardly be accused of "tainting" something that's already thoroughly corrupt.

That some people will cheat to win - shouldn't be a surprise to us, and shouldn't diminish our appreciation of the others.
That some sports were so poorly governed, that the top finisher for a decade cheated, his whole team cheated, the next five or ten finishers cheated, maybe half of the peloton would have cheated if they'd had the means or access, and all this went on under the firmly pinched nose of the sport's governing body, and had to be unearthed by outsiders e.g. French police (Festina), USADA (Armstrong), while the UCI actually gave doping cyclists briefings on how the testing - programs would be conducted - that *should* be a surprise to us. One at a time, each sport should be torn down and rebuilt, from a doping perspective. I don't need absolute certainty that an event is dope-free, a very high probability is enough. That is as good or better than you get on anything in life. |
I think this is sort of an eye into the world we live in. I suspect nowdays everything is tainted in some way: sports = drugs & fixing outcomes; banking - selling products bad for the investor & doing things to increase your profits over the good of investors, politics - what can't you say about that; corporations - lying about their operations, cooking the books on taxes, etc.; stock market - insider trading, etc.; students - cheating on exams; schools - cooking the books on test results and so on , & so on. Think of it & you won't be surprised at athlets using performance enhancing drugs.

Unfortunately, what Marv said....

He wasn't the first, he won't be the last. What galls me is when atheletes do get caught, the portray themselves as victims. We are very forgiving as a culture. Books, TV appearances, the lecture circuit and other avenues give most a 2nd chance.
I think the only suckers are (us) who support atheles as being 'special'. |
European pro cyclists have been doping for decades. All of them. Lance didn't taint the sport - but he surely and purposefully ruined the lives of many that put their trust in him and/or called him a friend.

The question should be, is there AY professional sport that the contestants have not used PED at some point in their life.
Sadly it starts younger and younger every year. |

i've heard that the estimate for olympic records is something on the order of 90% of them were set by athletes that were doping.

I love it.
It's a shame we don't live in the same town. My GF would love to cycle with you guys. She did half of the big cycle race they have around here called the Taupo Challenge. And she said "Stuff everyone else; I'm stopping halfway 'round and having a picnic." |
