Not your father's rock-n-roll....modern and heavy....what I'M listening to today
Pelican's got a wonderful music thread for the lighter classic-rock side of tastes. Fits the Pelican demographic. I used to post there often but it was clear that my tastes in music were, um, different than a lot of other Pelicans. That's perfectly fine. Tastes are tastes.
I decided to start this thread to share my not-mainstream tastes in music with Pelicans with open minds and an ear for something heavier, modern, or just different. I'll post a new tune every day, maybe more. Sometimes it will be just a song, sometimes a story or photos. Feel free to share or comment, but if it already fits with the other thread, please post it there. And if you don't like it, just stop visiting. No need to be negative. Otherwise, thanks for having an open ear..... This one should randomly set the tone and draw the line. It's by the L.A. band, In This Moment. The lead singer was recently voted one of the hottest chicks in rock by Revolver Magazine. This single "Blood" has broken into the Top Ten of both Billboard's "Active Rock" and "Mainstream Rock". This video has over 2.7 million views in 7 months....not "Gangnam Style" but for this genre that's huge. Maria Brink is actually a nice girl. Googled images of her could easily qualify for the chest thread. I actually like her voice, a lot. It's all an act, she's got great stage theatrics. They'll be in town here in five weeks opening for Halestorm. Ironically, I plan to be in L.A. See what you think:

The first song "Blood" reminds me alot of Marilyn Mansons' "This is the New ****". I like it. Glad to see someone else enjoys harder rock like I do.

![]() That first video is certainly has all of the shock value required to make it a commercial success with the tweener Marylin Manson crowd. Don' worry... I'll post something later on for you trash ![]() Admittedly, the music is pretty good... just totally not my style.

I listened to most everything that you have posted before on Baz's thread. I like all sorts of music, and like to be exposed to different stuff that I have not heard before. Thanks Eric.

Halestorm kicks all kinds of a$$! They filmed the video for "Miss the Misery" here in Flint. Must have been cheap.
![]() I like heavy stuff but that first song grates on my nerves. The gal does have a great voice when she's not screaming.

screaming doesn't necessarily mean heavy. But I'm a pasty white guy.
Sorry, but I'll take "light classic rock" like this any day: But you don't need to scream to be heavy: |

They filmed "Misery" in Flint because of The Machine Shop. It's likely one of the greatest rock venues in the country.

Oh, btw Lzzy Hale (Halestorm, above) was #1 in Revolver's "Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock"
Not my cup of tea personally

My taste in music usually runs to the more jazzy, acoustic, mellower stuff. I can appreciate some of the harder stuff, but it seems to always start with a melodic, almost operatic verse followed by grungy , crunchy guitars with demonic sounding vocals, back to operatic verse, rinse and repeat.
I know the same can be said for pop, mellow acoustic, very formulaic. It's just the harder stuff puts me on edge, actually depresses me. No way I can wrench on a car or do anything that requires concentration while listening to it. But hey, different strokes for different folks.

Kind of ironic that this thread is introduced as "not-mainstream" and the first two bands mentioned have a "lead singer (who) was recently voted one of the hottest chicks in rock by Revolver Magazine" and the "#1 in Revolver's "Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock". I guess your idea of not mainstream is different than mine.
Not being negative, just an observation. ![]() |

When I want to rock out I listen to this tune. Been listening to it for years now.
Cradle Of Filth - Nymphetamine - YouTube Edit: I just realized that all of these bands have had chick singers.

But you're right that these two bands aren't the deep underground "you've-never-heard-of-them-and-if-you-did-they'd-no-longer-be-cool" indy bands either. Neither In This Moment nor Halestorm are my favorite bands. Just though of the song "Blood" as one most people haven't heard but might find neat. Oh Haha brought up Halestorm, and being a "thread", things evolve. That's cool. YMMV

But can these girls shred!! Once you start bringing sexy girls in with heavy makeup and expensive production value, aren't you losing focus on the music? Didn't hear anything hear that would stand on its own without it. Bring on the next bands, I want to see where this is headin. Just sayin.

Gemini Syndrome
These guys are well-respected in their circle, but not well known. I first learned of them from Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch. Most of 5FDP is based in Las Vegas (Ivan is from Denver, just moved to Santa Barbara) and GS' lead singer Aaron Nordstrom is also from Las Vegas. The rest of GS is from Los Angeles and run in the same circles as other friends. And yes, Aaron in albino. The first song, "Resurrection" has a little screamo, which isn't my personal taste, but a lot of the newest stuff in this genre blends some guttural growl interspersed with some melody. Other than the growls, I really like the tune. So listen to the whole thing. The second and third songs, "Basement" and "Take This" were written more recently and released on their (only) EP this Summer. It's a little less screamo, a little more radio friendly. Watch for more from these guys. I hope they do well. They're friends. "Resurrection" "Basement" "Take This"
