California's tickets are getting out of control

So, parking tickets are in the $50 buck range for having an expired meter

Most towns used to charge around 27 bucks but King Jerry brown decided that the state should get $16 bucks so most cities deciced to raise it greater than the $16 so that King Jerry didn't get more extortion money than he.

One sone of mine drove with out a license ( left it at home ) and had a car that we where trying to get to pass smog but he drove it anyways with out tags $50 for one and $450 for the other. $900 bucks

Another son was playing basket ball in the park after hours $186!

Hmm why are we staying in this state?

You tell me.

My wife had a great job opportunity in Yorba Linda. I said no because of the gun laws, and she chided me because she thought that was the only reason why. So we sat down, and I showed her exactly how much of the $ from her 'great opportunity' would go to taxes. She was disgusted. Thats one Harvard fellowship trained physician CA won't be getting.....

Well, you could just decide to follow the rules!?

I am only half kidding. That's what I started doing after the local cops were beginning to milk the motorists for all they were worth (2008 and on). I figure if I don't speed, they can't get my money. I have been ticket free for a couple of years now.

I also stay away from areas that charge for parking with meters. I like suburbia and the countryside. Plenty of that in CA!

And what would be interesting, if someone from other states could chime in: How much does driving without registration and license cost in other states?

Parking tickets?

Taxes are a different story. Tougher to avoid those!

Only law abiding citizen care, and pay those fines. If you're a deadbeat, scofflaw, then these penalties mean nothing to you.

Really? They'll eventually have an arrest warrant out on you. Of course, if you don't mind going underground or going to jail, they have nothing on you!

illegals don't pay parking tickets or traffic fines, they just get another license from a friend.
The regular working stiff that gets caught in the car pool lane pays what at first he thinks is a 271 dollar ticket but I think the surcharge almost doubles it, not that I care what people cheating in the car pool lanes have to pay.
In California and probably most states it isn't about safety, it's about revenue.

When you're already underground, what do you have to lose?

I was in SF yesterday, looking over all the bikes parked by the Fed. Res. bldg. at 101 Market. A guy came out and had a ticket on his bike. Turns out he had entered the wrong space number when he had paid at the pay station. The fine was $72. Wow.

Rick,

How much was that speeding ticket you were fighting a couple years ago?

The one I fought (and beat) in Phoenix would have been about $220.

That's about where they start here. I recall under $200 for a 10 mph over.

On the speeding tickets, I almost could care less about the fine. It is the insurance that will make it a very expensive experience.

That was for 18 over. And, if you haven't had a ticket in the last two years, they let you do the online traffic school here to avoid the points AND fine. BUT, the online course costs exactly as much as the fine would have been. It's basically a bribe to shut up and pay or else pay and get points too.

The school is 18 mos. here. I never take it. I go through all the other motions first. You can always ask for school in court. I have become an expert in the 2008/9 time frame but decided it was easier to be slowing down. I also switched cars to a slower / less profiled model.

OK, that's one thing I don't understand. If we have such a revenue problem in this state, and the CHP has resolved itself to be a tax collector/revenue generator, why don't they go after carpool violations more? Just sitting at the onramp meter in the morning, I see there are easily 2 or 3 cars that zip by with only one apparent human inside. Unless there are really short passengers or a miniscule child car seat. Non-crew cab pickup trucks are the easiest violators to spot. And when I'm stuck in rush hour traffic in the #1 lane, probably every 4th car that passes by in the diamond lane is traveling solo (not including the hybrids with HOV stickers). Seems like it would be easy pickins for making tens of thousands of dollars per day. And it's traffic enforcement that I can't see the public opposing.

The fines for tickets here are outrageous but you can avoid most of them by reading the signs when you park and obeying traffic laws. It's really pretty simple.
