Map My Run

Anybody using this app?

I have been using this app for a few years to track runs and workouts and have lately had about 6 months of tracking simply disappear from my files.

I contacted them but their help desk is as useless as Dell's (don't get me started on this one)

Can anyone recommend a better GPS-based running app that they have utilized?

( I have a Garmin GPS watch too, but prefer to use my iphone so I can incorporate Pandora.)

VaSteve 02-26-2013 05:23 AM

I have used Endomondo when I remember to take my phone and turn it on.

vash 02-26-2013 06:32 AM

i use map my RIDE for biking.

for running, i like the Nike running app. i like the mile counts, that chime in with a woman's voice. also free.

aigel 02-26-2013 06:36 AM

I use garmin connect for all my workout logging, especially my runs and bike rides. I expect better reliability of their website as it is tied to a gazillion GPS devices and watches. It is not perfect, but they are constantly upgrading the site. Not sure if you could upload your non garmin data easily, may be worth finding out.

Off to a run ...

Try Strava, its the best running/cycling app out there.

It lets you compare yourself to other runners or cyclists and gives you a more detailed analysis of your effort. The user interface is also a lot nicer than mapmyrun.

if you have a Garmin you can automatically load it into

RunningAHEAD - Free online running log, training plans and running forum

lots of charts and reports to keep track, plus it's free

Well, is it really free? How do they pay their bills? If nothing else, I'd worry that they have the same customer service as map my run. They owe you nothing. Garmin wants to sell their hardware and have a tracking site that works as part of the package.

I like RunKeeper, it works for running, biking, walking...lots of different activity types, which is good for me as I don't just do one thing. And it is free.

Runtastic for hiking and running, Garmin for the road bikes.

I've got a Garmin Forerunner 305 that's great for running, does maps separately and in Google Earth as well as most any sat you'd care to track/graph, the barometer is wildly inaccurate so elevation change is useless but otherwise a very useful tool.

For bike I have a Garmin Edge 500 Red, does everything the 305 does and has an accurate barometer. The temp seems to be highly influenced by direct sun light but other wise has even more statistical features than the 305.

carreraken 02-26-2013 02:13 PM

I use the USA track & field site to map my runs prior to going out. Works well to map out distances and elevations.

Set elevation update to 'automatic'.

Hi Bill - I have the 305 and don't think it has a barometer. It uses GPS to calculate the elevation. Have you turned elevation correction on in the Garmin connect software? I believe it uses map elevation data to correct / smooth out your watch GPS information. My elevation information is quite good. I.e. if I run at the beach, it stays within 5 feet flat. If I climb a mountain several times on different workouts, it always is within 3 feet on the summit.

My tracking / logging of exercise really helps keeping me motivated / going.

+1 for RunKeeper. Been using it for a couple of years. It's only gotten better. Works pretty flawlessly now.

I have mine set to call out my pace every half a mile. Lets me know if I'm slacking. Also, it's electronic confirmation of what I always suspected... I run faster downhill than uphill!

Here's a run I did a few weeks ago. I think it should be viewable:

That's pretty crude. (NO offense!) I was hoping for something better than gmap-pedometer.com which I use currently to plan runs in unknown areas. The gmap pedometer site at least does automatic tracing if there is a road or trail in the map. The US T&F site looks like you have to create your own trace by clicking over and over connecting points with straight lines.

There has to be a better page for planning than these?

I use the Nike app, works well 99% of the time.
I did try Map my Run. After a 100 min run in Brisbane, I discovered my mid point had apparently been somewhere in the Indian Ocean. Impressive for a SR 71 I thought, let alone a middle aged weekend runner.
Accuracy of app dubious.

black_falcon 02-27-2013 01:37 AM

I sampled them all and Strava is what I've stayed with, although I don't like the new interface in recent updates, it still let's you combine cycling and running with the best features. Yup, competing against yourself and other users times on what they call "segments" keeps the motivation levels high. Had my share of who can one-up each other pissing matches with a few strangers and find it amusing how competitive people can be.

KevinTodd 02-27-2013 03:19 AM

Thanks for the tips. Gonna check out your suggestions!

I'm pretty sure that elevation is through a barometer of some sort. You get elevation data indoors when there are no GPS signals present.

I do have smoothing on but the elevation data is ridiculous, 3000' of elevation change on a 5 mi route where the biggest hill is maybe 100' x4

The 500 is great and gives data that coincides w/ Google earth elevations and the totals are at the very least in the ball park and are also consistent over the same 30mi route

red-beard 02-27-2013 03:45 AM

I use Map my Ride for biking, but only to generate courses. None of the "apps" are better than a dedcated device like the Garmins. I use a Garmin Edge 800 for my biking needs.

Something is wrong with your watch. It should not be that bad. Here more info on the 305 by the DC Rainmaker guy who is pretty much the GPS watch review guru on the net:

Quote:

It’s pretty amazing to look at total ascent/decent, which includes the tons of times you go up and down small hills. Beware though that it’s best to use some of the altitude correction features available in software such as Sports Tracks as the native altitude sensors within the device are a bit ‘liberal’ due to using GPS elevation instead of a barometric altimeter. So sometimes it’s a bit off.
The link is here:

Back to tracking software. The above article is fairly old but it also mentions Sport Tracks for tracking activities with the DC Rainmaker guy appears to use. Looks pretty solid.

My oldest full function bike computer used a barometer. And often, due to changes in the weather, would show a different altitude at the start and the finish, on a circle ride.

I've found the Garmin GPS to be pretty good, but I don't use it for gospel.

vash 02-27-2013 09:20 AM

yesterday, i needed "map my slow ass crawl". i think i had a cold and breathing was labored.

today, maybe it is "map my couch ride" or i'll do the crawl again.

great tips on this thread. first time i used Nike running, i found out my five miler was really a 4 miler. bummer!

I'm reading though this and one thing I can't figure out. Are you running with your smartphone somehow attached to you? I tried running with a wristband mini-disc player years ago and it bothered the heck out of me. I can't imagine carrying an Iphone on a run.

Or is this some sort of static upload to map a course and you just follow it?

He is probably using a jersey that has pockets in the back.

I keep my Samsung Galaxy in a Spibelt Classic when I run. $20. Works great.

I use one of these for my run/walks. They work great and I can add drink bottles to them.

jyl 02-27-2013 02:33 PM

Anyone use an armband pouch? Seems they'd fit phone, keys, money.

Scott R 02-27-2013 02:34 PM

I really can't have anything on me, things jostling around or moving are a major issue on lung runs. Ear buds for instance are more hassle then they are worth to me, having to put one back in or adjust one really screws up my timing.

greglepore 02-27-2013 03:11 PM

It may be geeky, but I use a plain bike jersey-perfect for Iphone, wallet, car keys if I'm at a trailhead, a gel flask or two if needed, yada...

Looks really good on the girls. I couldn't stand it.

I minimize my carry on runs to a flip phone (remember those?) and a house key in my pant pocket. Longer runs I take a bottle but keep it in my hand.

Speaking of ear buds - am I the only one running without music? I mean, I see people at races with ear plugs playing music!?

It is super annoying if you share a trail either on foot or on the bike. The person you want to pass has no clue you are coming. You can yell at them, ring your bell etc. Once I pass them with the dog a few inches away, they often jump 3 feet to the side because they are startled. It is enjoyable to watch that. :D

I don't for the exact reason you mentioned, I want to be aware of everything going on around me.

jyl 02-27-2013 03:59 PM

I don't wear buds on the bike. I think it is a sin. Just as bad as wearing earbuds while driving.

KevinTodd 02-27-2013 06:50 PM

Target : '+itemtitle+' : Image Zoom

Pandora+Run=Zone

I listen to music when I train, but it would be impossible for me during races--I need to concentrate solely on the run. My trail races and Obstacle Course runs physically wouldn't allow it.
