Maybe I'm a scrooge, but I feel that if you can't afford to feed yourself, you can't afford to feed a pet. By the same token, if you need need gov't assistance for food and housing, then you shouldn't be buying smokes and booze, either. And don't get me started on the whole EBT debacle.

Yes, they do that in the land of OZ, if the indigenous have pets the government pays for their food too. Most of the indigenous I saw were standing around drinking during the day, Alice Springs was supposed to be a hot spot for that. Serious drinking and break ins.

Half of the people on food stamps already don't really deserve them, and could make a life for themselves if they stopped being lazy azz drunks who chainsmoke. For me to be willing to pay for thier pet's food, the pet would have to be a Lion, or Tiger.......just saying !

FWIW my wife and I have a program where we give away pet food to the poor once a month. Local stores like Sam's club provide the food and we chip in ourselves. They have to register and we weeded out the "takers" and the crazies but there are ALOT of people out there who are hurting now- through no fault of their own- even if everything is sunny rebecca according to our president and the msm- and we live in one of the richest counties in the US.

why should their f'n pets suffer or be given to a pound where in all likelihood they'll be put down? I'm not saying government should do this- they'd just make it cost ten times as much and be half as effective- but it's certainly good for others to.

A new donation-based program called Pet Food Stamps aims to provide food stamps for pets of low-income families and for food stamp recipients who otherwise could not afford to feed their pets, reported ABC affiliate KVIA in Las Cruces, N.M.
Based in New York, the program is open to anyone in the United States. More than 45,000 pets have already been signed up in the past two weeks, according to the program’s founder and executive director Marc Okon. Once need and income is verified, the families will receive pet food each month from pet food retailer Pet Food Direct for a six-month period.

“We’re not looking for government funding at this point,” Okon told ABCNews.com. “Should the government be willing to provide assistance further down the line, we will look into it.”

Seems to be pet owners looking out for other pets.

I don't see anything insidious about it. I don't like the concept, but it's a free country.

If you can somehow "weed out the takers and the crazies" and find good, honest, people who are down on thier luck, I say go for it.

I know many people who have rottweillers in apartments, or other such non-sense and can't afford medical bills or food for themselves, let alone a coupla big dogs. I guess being down on one's luck is sometimes one's own doing.
