Yeah, but how long before you have to do it again?

OS X server...runs Apache, sendmail, PHP and MySQL like a champ. Or if you're on a budget, you can use the same hardware and run RedHat or other Linux distribution.

NT reboots are needed/recommended at least once a week in order to clear the mess that MS makes with memory management. I have seen (and done) TWICE A DAY reboots if you have some memory leak problems (especially with Java stuff).

Never had to reinstall the software unless a Service Pack is wrong.

Not many sites have the traffic that Wayne has with the hardware that Wayne has installed... don't think that Linux or OS X or anything else will make a big difference.

PS. I do not like MS either, but if ain't broken don't fix it

Wayne, you just clarified what most people don't understand about being in the data processing field.

Data processing professionals make big bucks because of the never-ending 'keep up with the technology' problem (especially at the mercy of Microsoft).

I have seen DP pros making big bucks and they decided not to reeducate themselves......they are now all unemployed.

You don't have to run MySQL if you don't want, you could use PostGres or something like that. MySQL works wonders simply because it its powerful enough for 90% of web based applications, extremely fast (much faster than any other SQL variant) and pretty well supported. The whole MySQL, Apache and PHP combination is pretty good.

I have found anything Microsoft a big headache, but then again, nothing is perfect.

Or perhaps I just don't know enough about it. But on the other hand, why learn something all over again, if the benefit is minimal. I guess that's why I don't quite understand what the benefit is of spending all that time learning a foreign language...

These days Apache has one single configuration file. I am not a CS guy, and I can set it up no problem. It has matured quite well. If you run OS X, you can use the gui config and never touch the .conf file, although if you have some specialized needs then you need to tweak the file manually.

MySQL runs the backend for CBS's content management system, as well as other high-volume, high-traffic sites. It's not perfect, but pretty darn close, and bugs are fixed on the order of days as opposed to months.

cost-to-benefit is user dependent. But at some point, you have to decide if you want to cut your losses and start over. imho you can't make a silk purse (robust, low maintenance site) out of a sow's ear (MS products).
