Looks like a fun project Mike, good luck! I've always wanted to do a 914/6 GT with a 3.2.

keep posting progress.

The best mod ( far & away) I ever made for the handling aspect was bracing the F & R towers to the roll cage. That eliminates the flexi-flyer aspect of the 914 chassis and allows one to "tune" the suspention.

Ayup, I sold it to my co-driver a couple years back just before I retired. He's taken it up a notch or 2. Now also has Lotus Elise suspension under it on a new sub-frame.

It had a 2.7L in it under my stewardship.

Mike, your biggest challenge will be the motor. If you want that thing to last 24 hours on the track, don't raise the compression or put a big cam in it. Run it as detuned as you can and still be able to get out of everyone's way.

I went through 2 hot rod Type IV motors in short order. They are very hard to keep cool. And if you invest in a DTM cooling shroud and fan, you will be in that thing a ton because it don't stop there.

It really is a steep slope.

Read this.

How we kept the TIV motor cool in the summer heat:

Stayed around 190° the entire daytime portion of the race. Cooler at night.

We want to go big bore, low compression, low revs... just displacement.

It is down to just the body now, stripping paint & sandblasting things.

Cage is starting next week.

This isn't my first time around the block, but I'm used to things more carbon monocoque and less 40-year-old tin can. So far the car has been nice to work with, everything has come apart great and no surprises. We got one hell of a deal.

That project sounds like a lot of fun, Mike. I'm going to live vicariously through you guys.

Look at the rules closely. If you are competitive in Chumpcar you will be heavily scrutinized. I've run Portland and Spokane in a Miata. We won the 1st Portland Chump race in 2009. We were running top 10 last time out but hampered by fuel capacity issues. The top cars had more fuel carrying capacity and were pitting about every 2 hours vs. our 1:30 to refuel.

trekkor- what kind of power do you think you made with that type 4? What displacement? Are those Webers?

andrew15 03-04-2013 03:52 PM

Hey, we are in the same boat
Here's my 73 2.0 getting ready for an illustrious career as a Chump Car car.
I think there are 3-4 914 builds going on right now.

Hopefully, I'll get some test days and a couple of races in this year
Possibly the Spokane 36, but I'm not sure - a move to central Canada may be in the making.

I need to start a build thread in the 914 forums. I know there is a big 914-crowd out here in CA. We want to stick to the type 4 for now, keep it simple... but I have some very unpure thoughts for the future involving a 1000cc motorcycle engine...

I'll have to check with the car owner.
Here's the dyno run:

125hp seems to ring a bell.
Yes, Webers. 2 liter.
