$(^*@#$#@!!!! Paint fades THAT much?

We painted about 3 years ago during a remodel. I had to do some plaster repair in the living room. Its an open airy room with a large picture window on the south side. Lots of light.

I take the exact can of paint that I left off with, and mix it up really well, then paint the patched areas. It looks totally off, quite a bit darker than the paint on the walls. I thought for sure the paint had went bad, so I opened up and a fresh can (I had over bought at the time, and had one left over). Same result!

I did NOT want to have to prep and paint this room, so I figured I would invest in a fresh quart of the same color, just to make sure their wasn't something wrong with the old paint.

Nope. No dice. The new paint is basically identical to the old. Its not the paint in the cans, its the paint on the wall. Its faded a LOT in 3 years. Mother fluffin' @#$@#$@$#@!!!!

The stuff is Benjamin Moore Aura, I guess I had it in my mind it would be more color fast. Oh well.....at least I have plenty of paint on hand to finish the job.

Light colors, use light colors. The darker the color the more noticable the fade.

Paint the one whole wall, you won't be able to tell the difference after a 90* corner.

Exactly, we just had painters here to paint where a door once resided. The area was roughly 7' x 5' that had been plastered, sanded, and primed. The painters informed us that to ensure it matches that the whole wall must be done. After the painters left, there was absolutely no evidence that the doors had ever existed. They proclaimed that this is pretty much a requirement for 'eggshell' paints???

Paint will fade within two month especially near a window. It is just as easy painting the entire wall. Sometimes you might be able to computer match an existing faded wall color and go from there. We had some luck with that. Hit and miss really.

Ah yes, the problem with the 'paint the one wall' strategy is that the room is a damn mobius!(not really, but its painful). Its plaster, and the walls curve up into the ceiling, and there is a connecting archway that actually leads to another room. I had to add a geometric paint detail at that point so we could have a different color in the next room.

There is no one wall, its all wall or nothing. I am so screwed.....

Any chance of getting a piece of the plaster/dry wall with the faded paint on it & taking it to get a computerized color match? If so, I'd try a quart to see if it matches close enough before I bought more.

Very hard to match even after 1 year. As a builder, other than the standard light off-whites, whenever we touch up a custom color we typically have to paint corner to corner.

Had a case a few months ago where we even cut out a square of sheetrock, brought it to Sherwin Williams, looked great on sample but we still had to paint to corners.

Also, when they mix paint, better to get 5 gallons mixed than single gallons. If the pigments machine dispenses a little off, it's mixed into 5 gallons instead of 1.

how hard to move everything by that wall; and drop a barrier so you can use a sprayer and do a fade?
