Anyone into British Bikes? 68 BSA Starfire

Considering this little single.

Anyone (particularly in Austin) into these bikes?

Had the 441 Victor Single (similar)......OK to putt around town....Shook your teeth out at highway speeds. Pretty rustic, but buy it if the price is right......

That's a great bike!

As mentioned, you will not be getting any speeding tickets but you'll look ace.

Sorry, couldn't find a bigger pic.

BSAs seem to be more rare than Triumphs. Don't know if that necessarily makes them more collectable. But neater when you show up at the local watering hole.

After riding a friend's BMW one lunger for a day in some residential, rural, & mountain areas, you couldn't get me to get on another one no matter how rare it was.

Parts look pretty iffy.

The guy selling it was a Tri dealer for 20 years in KC, now 75 years old in Austin. Seems like
the real deal.

Bike's about $2k, had a recent top end apparently a driver (rider) but not at all perfect, which is
perfect for me. May pick it up this week to putt around with my daughter and teach her how to ride on it.

As a long time restorer and owner of old brit bikes I'd say that would be fun if you like it for it's classic looks and pedigree but you won't find it either practical or reliable by modern standards. as for teaching your daughter.. it has a finicky kick starter, lousy brakes, and has the shifter and footbrake on the opposite side from anything made after 1974. If you just want something for fun and transportation there are lots of excellent relatively modern bikes (dr350 for example and many others) at very reasonable prices. I don't mean to discourage you but please define exactly what you plan to do with it to avoid disappointment.

regards,
Phil

Good points, Phil. Basically, I want it to putt around, fix, putt around, fix, repeat. But still looking around. I'll look at a dr - also looking at 70s CB350s - all the rage with the hipsters in Austin, right up until they drop it the first time then get scared. Those bikes are nice and just starting to come on the market.

It's got valves, not ports, so at least it would sound nice thumpin' thru the neighborhood on the way to dairy queen on a summer Sunday evening.

I forgot about the shifter/brake thing. Hah! This ain't a beginner bike, fo-sho.

I had one also, a 441. It was unrideable. Had lots and lots of brit bikes but
the ONLY one I would ever buy now would be a Norton. The Commandos are near perfect bikes and the 750 Atlas F/bed was perfect in my opinion. That BSA is good looking but you might be disappointed, I think. Good luck. The 500 gold stars were wonderful bikes but the smaller singles......

Pretty bikes, BSAs.
I had a mid 60's A10 Super Rocket; a 650 with Amal TT racing carbs.
Loved that bike & the sound.
