Aereo: The future of TV is here today (or is it?)
I have said that if it were not for live TV, I would have dropped my pay-TV service (Uverse) a long time ago and just have gone with Internet service. We watch live TV for mostly news programs and some sporting events. We are in an area where attempting to pull in a signal OTA is iffy at best. But, we do happen to be considered part of the NYC metro market. Because of that, we have Aereo available.
I signed up for a free Aereo account to see what it is like. I have to say, I like it a lot. The picture is clear, and doesn't buffer. I watched a hockey game and some of The Masters yesterday on my TV and was quite impressed. Although Aereo has won all of the legal challenges that have been raised so far, I am still trying to figure out if this will last. A one-year subscription is only $80 and that gives me unlimited viewing and "DVR" capabilities. That's $6.67 a month versus the $53 a month that it costs for Uverse TV. Is this the future of live TV? Too bad they have not hit the West coast yet. I'd be all over it. I am so ready to dump my FIOS package. 170.00/month. Internet access is good. I don't need a land line and 350 channels of crap and another 20 spanish channels which I will never watch. Complete BS. I really hope someone comes in and cleans out ATT, Time Warner, Verizon, etc.

It's just a matter of time. When will industries understand that fighting it just slightly delays the inevitable. VHS...still happened. Tape recorders...still happened. Downloading music...still happened. Only a matter of time before TV is completely over the internet. I guess people who work at these companies just can't figure out how to profit on it so they continue to lose countless legal battles.

What might stop this are internet data caps. U-verse has data caps on their home internet service, which you have to read the fine print of the contract to see.

TV has no future. None. The crap I get on cable TV I think they should pay us to turn it on. Mostly commercials. And bad commercials at that. I can't even remember what product they pitch afterwards, and I can't remember the last time I was influenced to buy something by one. How is that business plan going to keep going?
Radio is doomed to the same fate for the same reasons. Recently put in a digital car unit so I listen to one USB stick with lot's of my favorite music. Why wade through the endless crap on the Radio? Smartest thing I've done in a while, in terms of peace of mind.
