Pure gimmick. Current cruise controls can react to hills with no perceived loss of speed or surging (at least in my VW).
I think their time might be better served making a car that will react to traffic and road conditions to keep you safe. A lot of the tech is there, it needs to be refined (and be proven litigation-proof).
The search for technology which says, "We're the Best!" is getting harder to come by.
