Performance standards

Was thinking about this the other day and had a question. We sorta measure some of the performance aspects of our cars with the 1/4 mile, a Euro thing is the 1 km run, zero to whatever but a standard that I always liked was the zero to 100 mph then back to zero, my question is what would be a good time and what would be a good distance from start to finnish? You seldom see this test done, maybe only seen it in print a few times and I can't remember the times or distance's. SmileWavy
Anyone have any idea's?
Finn

I guess the reason the use 0-60 or 1/4 mile times for a measurement is because no one around her can really get there vehicles any faster with out killing them selfs or with out getting locked up. LOL;)

I don't remember the distance, but the Cobra did 0-100-0 in either 22 or 26 seconds if I remember correctly. I'd imagine some modern cars might beat that by a decent amount.

pavulon 03-08-2013 11:22 AM

My recollection of the 0-100-0 time for a 427 cobra was about half of that.

Evans, Marv 03-08-2013 11:38 AM

If that's accurate, it's incredible! I don't know if I'd like to be along for the ride. It would be pretty violent. I thought the time I remembered was pretty fast.

1965 Shelby Cobra 427 – Road Test – Car and Driver

14.5 seconds/13.8 with Ken Miles driving.

The Ultima has the record at 9.4 seconds.

I speculate I could go 0-100-0 in under 1 minute with the Prius, but I don't want to waste the gas to find out . . .

"What's more, there are several automobiles being produced in the United States that will break through that arbitrary 25 second barrier like the Germans through the Maginot Line. One is the 427 Sting Ray; another, most certainly, is the new 427 Cobra from Shelby American."

Am I daft, or didn't the German's invade through Belgium?

The first 0-100-0 test I recall reading about was on the Aston Martin DB4 GT....figures released by Aston Martin, and passed on by Road & Track.

As good a performance indicator as any, I suppose...but how important is it for a street car? Not much, unless you are James Bond, a hottie at his side, outdriving the machine gun packing bad guys in their clunky sedan.

I like a car that offers performance, but it's far from the sole criteria I use. Especially these days of freeway traffic so dense you can't really use what you have. The older I get, the more comfort seeps into that criteria along with economy of purchase and hassles of maintaining the thing. Mileage not a big factor for me because I don't drive that many miles annually. Gas could go to $10 per gallon & it would be a minor blip on my radar screen because of those low miles driven.

So, buy what you like...most of us do anyway, right?

Impressive as the ultima is, I think I could wait the extra 2.4-odd seconds the Ruf CTR wants to do 0-100-0..

0-100 MPH in 6.8 seconds has always seemed, uh, adequate :)

Paul I have that R&T at home. I'll try to remember to post those numbers when I get home next weekend.

Erhm, two things(I'm not googling this, I could be wrong.)

The Maginot line was constructed post WWI, there was a lot of fighting over policy between fixed and mobile forces. Maginot was a WWI era war leader that went into politics, and his fixed defensive line idea ended up being implemented due to shortages of man power for a mobile army.(Caused in part by unwillingness of the French to be in the army)

So if it wasn't built until after WWI, the Germans couldn't of invaded right through it.

Secondly, although I know less of WWI than perhaps I should, it doesn't seem like the Germans had as easy time of cutting through France like they did in WWII in which only a few French Commanders actually resisted like it was a war, and the politicians caved and handed things over to Germany.

In WWI, forces built on the spot defenses, they both held eachother from advanding, more advanced defenses were then built behind the lines in case of a break out from the front lines. Offensives rarely broke all the way through the lines on either side, and whatever advance was gained, new lines were built ahead of the taken lines. This went both ways, with neither side really able to make headway. Eventually, resources stacked up against Germany, and the Germans were hit in very difficult terrain. The terrain made advance difficult, but it also meant there were less fixed defenses. Once broken through, the Germans were put on the defensive until they surrendered.

I'm trying to be old fashioned and not just look these things up on "wikipedia" today. SmileWavy The cool thing about Pelican is there is pretty much always some one very well versed in anything, and they can have some very interesting stories to tell outside of what you'd find in a casual internet search.

The Maginot Line

You are correct...I was wrong.

Now, anybody care to add to the 0-100-0 topic?

Evans, Marv 03-08-2013 07:27 PM

Hey, I'll take one of those 427 Cobras for $7K. I'd also like to go back to the age I was when they cost that much. If I remember right, that was a time when a man could completely provide for his family on $400 to $500/month and $7K was a very large amount of money to the average guy. I had a neighbor down the street from me in the early '80s who had one in his garage. He'd rumble by once in a while with his kids in the car when he'd take it out to circulate the fliuds. I asked him what he was going to do with it once when I was there drooling over it. He said he'd decided to sell it for around $98K and use the money to buy a new house. I don't think he ever tried the 0-100-0 thing.

If I wasn't looking at it from an investment standpoint, I'd want an ERA 427 cobra with their optional rear suspension, all-aluminum 427, a subdued or traditional, non-metallic color without stripes on magnesium Halibrands with billboard Goodyears...not that I've thought about it much.

You would have a fine car. Probably the best glass car on the market. I don't know about the magnesium Halibrands though. I would think a new alloy would be better. 0-100-0 would be better than the one in the article with the new engine builds and pad materials. Better yet with Avons instead of the BBs.
