The best genealogy program?
 

OK I need advise from the brain trust.

My father died last month. We have been cleaning out his house and I am finding huge piles of family photos, and a lot of genealogy in hand written notes.

I am going to bring it all into the digital age. I would like to have something web based that I have total control over. I would like to be able to have family members access it and make corrections and updates. That way I don't have to do everything myself.

The general public could see it but not modify anything.

I want to fill in as much family history as I have, and right now that is back to the 1700s

This is a story about my Great, great, great, great grandfather. The Driftwood mentioned in the story is Driftwood OK. I do have one photo of him.

So the real question is What is the Photoshop of genealogy programs? What is the program that is most common? Which is the best?

Ancestry.com was what my brother liked a lot. It is a pay site.

Family search is free and by the Mormons. You have to give some personal information to join the site but the last time I checked it was free.

Hope this helps. It is great that you are getting in to this but just be forewarned, genealogy can get addictive.:)

Ancestry.com is worth every penny. You can customize your own tree and link it to known branches. The archive of documents is unbelievable. Pay for full global access. It's incredible to follow the line across the pond into the old country.

Ancestry.com is run by the mormons, too. Depending on your personal views, buyer beware. It has come out that they use the information from their databases for their post-death baptisms.

That sounds like the tin foil hat thinking. I don't want this moved into PARF.

I guess I am not too worried they will baptize my dead relatives.

OK, how does someone get baptized if they are dead and burried?
