gentlemen. how do you give advice to a young guy about talking to women?

one of my engineers. smart, regular looking, athletic. even mildly funny. i KNOW he has a decent job.

he tried to talk to a girl near me and he flat out vapor locked. i tried to be "Wingman" and help him pull out of the tail spin, but he definately got caught in her jet wash. done. (sorry for the top gun reference)

anyways, how to you teach a kid confidence? i tried the "you have nothing to lose only things to gain". lines.

help me help him. any words of wisdom i can pass on to him?

zip-ties, duct-tape and chloroform?

now dont all go serious on me..this joke is more about fun.

^^^ +1 on that. My roommate in college was an engineering student. Said his girlfriend was the most beautiful woman on the planet. Said that over and over. She shows up to visit him (sleep with him) one weekend, and I could hardly tell what species she was. Oh well, now they probably have grandchildren...

I agree 100%... I have worked with engineers for a while and most of them are not socially graceful or good with communication by nature(putting it mildly when it comes to the ones I work with). I think it's just the way they are wired.
Even my friends that are young engineers I've known since college were either quirky to begin with or are well on their way there now.

The question is his best friend. Ask about her. Women love to tell their story. Space the questions with short statements about himself, followed by another question so it doesn't look like an interrogation. If she's interested she'll play along and if he can't figure that out tell him to try a gay bar.

frankly, men get all tied up in needing to control or create the conversation. we don't. in fact, we suck at it, nearly always. a woman knows within seconds if the guy is interesting to her. all you have to do is say hello and see if she is interested. if she is, she'll talk and the guy can listen. that's it.

You can't "teach" someone confidence; either you have it, or you don't. Usually, guys that don't have it are self-conscious about some perceived flaw. Get over your personal hang-ups and learn to love yourself, and the confidence will flow. Tell him not to go into a conversation with a chic with an end goal in mind; just go at it to enjoy talking to a pretty face in hopes she might have a decent personality, too. If anything happens to progress from that point, bonus! I've never really understood guys that can't talk to women. Maybe it's because I had a ton of sisters, I dunno.
