Solar powered water cracking....for hydrogen, end product..

So, someone patented and licensed the process......WTF happened afterwards, oil cartel plot to suppress?

Non US, source....

Patent number?

cstreit 03-12-2013 01:15 PM

I seriously doubt you can patent basic chemistry. Application of electricity to water will do this. We learned this in elementary school chemistry right? Use a solar cell instead of a battery. It would have to be a pretty unique process to patent I would imagine.

RWebb 03-12-2013 01:48 PM

you could patent a device to do it tho

it just sounds expensive, given how much O wants its little H buddies

Joe Bob 03-12-2013 01:52 PM

Cracking H from O can be done, solar powered cracking is by definition a FAR cheaper alternative once the infrastructure has been built.

Cracking water with sunlight

Quote:

At the core of the reactor are two honeycomb-like ceramic chambers coated with oxygen-deficient ferrite structures containing zinc and nickel. At high enough temperatures (800-1200°C) these materials strip water of its oxygen, leaving hydrogen gas to bubble away (Zn0.xNi(1-0.x)Fe2O4 + yH2O Zn0.xNi(1-0.x)Fe2O4+y + yH2). The oxidised materials must then be recycled, driving off their collected oxygen as gas, in a separate reaction step at 1000-1200°C.
so it's not electrolysis. it's using a catalyst to do the splitting at high temps

cheaper than directly using solar PV panels?

than any other ways to generate and/or transport H?

that's what I don't get - I'm fine with research on it, but as far as a build-out(?)

john70t 03-12-2013 02:54 PM

To make hydrogen: you need salt water and sunlight and low-voltage electrodes.

I'm stuck there...
Carry on.

sammyg2 03-12-2013 03:00 PM

Cool, he can put in $3 worth of energy and get $1 worth out. Where do I sign?

red-beard 03-12-2013 03:05 PM

I have been approached on 2 different solar based water to hydrogren projects. In both cases my attitude was "Cash in Advance on all sales".

RWebb 03-12-2013 03:05 PM

what would the amortized cost be for the panels, charge controllers, etc.?

Joe Bob 03-12-2013 03:09 PM

Sammy math...show me da calcs......Hydrogen is #1 on the chart....it's a building block. Build it, then you can tear it down.

USE IT....

Oooopsie...forgot to add:D

What is the cost of kidney failure due to (federally-undisclosed) fracking chemicals?

0$

john70t 03-12-2013 03:51 PM

Red- How 'bout AQ dumping toxic in the LA reservoir poisoning millions?
What is that worth?

(only a small ;))

Cajundaddy 03-12-2013 04:18 PM

People tend to fear what they don't understand. Now will someone please buy that young lady a sandwich. :)

PS: Salt water plus electrolysis = Cl2(chlorine)+ NAOH+H2
Distilled water + electrolysis= H2+O2

strupgolf 03-12-2013 04:25 PM

What is the cost of me viewing this image and my wife looking over my shoulder? Hmmmm
.. Man, that's one fine image.
