Steering problem with the Taco

2006 Tacoma 95,000 miles. The steering has become heavy rather suddenly (not overnight but I've only noticed it the past two days) it seems. It seems to be mostly when I turn right. It doesn't return to neutral after completing the turn.

Given that it's only on the right I don't think it's the pump or master cylinder. So maybe it's a thing with the rack?

What do you guys think?

VINMAN 03-16-2013 04:18 PM

yeah, sounds like a rack issue.

2x or 4x?
Tire pressures good?
Balljoint /tie rod end?
CV boots good (if 4x)?

Rack is shot. My Altima did same thing...gotta love warranty work :)

flatbutt 03-16-2013 06:57 PM

4X4...I hope the warranty covers it.

You have an extended warranty?

Hi ya Steve! yes I do.

Steve Carlton 03-17-2013 08:45 AM

Should cover a steering rack, unless it's just a powertrain warranty. Check your coverage- and to make sure the warranty company is still in business... I seriously doubt Toyota would step up for something like this.

john70t 03-17-2013 12:02 PM

There's a TSB for pulling. Not sure of the cause. Several others for rattling: Service Bulletin 165331 for Toyota STEERING | AutoMD
2006 Toyota Tacoma Steering Service Bulletin 165331
"Repair manual supplement: vehicle pulling to one side. Toyota all model years. *mj 2002 - 2007 model years. Toyota/scion models."

Besides the rack (more dangerous), it could be anything in the suspension.

Sounds like your taco's rack is shot. :D

flatbutt 03-29-2013 09:21 AM

this has gotten ridiculous

Just found that the power steering lines need to be replaced too. WTF!!!

Tech says EVERYTHING IS COVERED WITH RUST. Fk me.

pete3799 03-29-2013 10:24 AM

Rust you say. Hope your frame looks better than this.
2003 double cab.....was told by Toyota they wouldn't do anything for me because i didn't get my frame sprayed with their miracle juice.

A long flat piece of metal?
That's the easiest welding fix in the book, which only requires some thick plate....or lightweight I-beams with a cross of tubular to take it into 3D.

herr_oberst 03-29-2013 12:59 PM

What the hell happened to Toyota quality in the past few years?

Steve Carlton 03-29-2013 05:52 PM

What happened with the extended warranty? Did you take the truck to a dealer? If so, I'd get a second opinion at a reputable independent.

I plated both sides (other side was cracked too) and a new cross member.
Last month i was hauling a used motor in the back of the taco to put into my daughters car when all of a sudden the back of the truck jumps into the air.
I look back in the mirror and there's my spare tire laying in the middle of the road:eek:
About a week later i get a notice for a recall on the spare tire carrier:rolleyes:
