If you take a photo of the serial no., get a notarized letter and then send it to yourself, you're fine if the guy later reports it stolen. In fact, you could put it on your homeowner's or renter's policy too and that'd be a marker for chain of ownership.

HELL NO! do not do this. Contact a police office give them the sr# and model if it's clean take it to a gun store and sell it. He might get 3x the money for it and it's not a drain on society. Everyone of us pay taxes. Do you think the gun buy back fairy just gives cash that came from no where? Now if he / she takes it to a gun store a small businessman gains from the sale.

I thought all handguns have to be registered in CA?

I like Jim's advice better than mine. Good point about the money source.
