Why do we still have drinkers?

Considering the downside to alcohol consumption why do people still drink?

gacook 03-21-2013 02:33 PM

Yeah, I hate the drunks. Total lack of self control, horrid stench of alcohol on their breath, slurred speech, unkempt clothing...Anyone who drinks alcohol should just be taken out in the street and shot. Oh, wait...that's just smokers. Drunks can go right on ahead and keep killing people with their cars ;)

ckelly78z 03-21-2013 02:33 PM

A- because I want to,
B- because nothing goes better with certain foods like a cold beer in a frosted mug.
C- because I can legally do it
D- For the health benefits of one drink a day

I guess it comes under the heading of bad habit. And it's legally available.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/fles.gif

Because good health is just prolonging death.

That is all you got? Suppose I want to hold up a bank... naked... smoking a joint and drinking a beer... because I want to... is the enough?

Because:

Go for it, I say! Especially if you are looking for your 15 minutes of fame on YouTube.

I consider every wine over $10 a food, and Demerara rum with a splash of Coke is undeniably medicinal.

Because Tequila is a gift from God.

weseeeee 03-21-2013 05:53 PM

Because I like a good glass of wine....and beer...and rum....Tequila is good:)

Hey, it's out there, so someone has to drink it. I just look at it as doing my part.:D

And it makes social gatherings of like minded folks (most of our friends) an absolut(e) hoot.

...and people who drive fast, who go out in inclement weather, those that knowingly go through bad neighborhoods, folks who stress out about work, those with high blood pressure thats not being treated too!

Why dont we have LAWS to prevent these people from harming themselves? What is our government doing to prevent these dangerous activities?!

Hey, I'm with you, ckelly, but the question is "why do we still have drinkers?"

I would think that a "drinker" is someone who has a problem. I don't and I doubt you do, either.

I'm less than one a day. Many times one or less a week.

My friends, I had not intended to discuss this controversial subject at this particular time. However, I want you to know that I do not shun controversy. On the contrary, I will take a stand on any issue at any time, regardless of how fraught with controversy it might be. You have asked me how I feel about whiskey. All right, here is how I feel about whiskey:

If when you say whiskey you mean the devil’s brew, the poison scourge, the bloody monster, that defiles innocence, dethrones reason, destroys the home, creates misery and poverty, yea, literally takes the bread from the mouths of little children; if you mean the evil drink that topples the Christian man and woman from the pinnacle of righteous, gracious living into the bottomless pit of degradation, and despair, and shame and helplessness, and hopelessness, then certainly I am against it.

But, if when you say whiskey you mean the oil of conversation, the philosophic wine, the ale that is consumed when good fellows get together, that puts a song in their hearts and laughter on their lips, and the warm glow of contentment in their eyes; if you mean Christmas cheer; if you mean the stimulating drink that puts the spring in the old gentleman’s step on a frosty, crispy morning; if you mean the drink which enables a man to magnify his joy, and his happiness, and to forget, if only for a little while, life’s great tragedies, and heartaches, and sorrows; if you mean that drink, the sale of which pours into our treasuries untold millions of dollars, which are used to provide tender care for our little crippled children, our blind, our deaf, our dumb, our pitiful aged and infirm; to build highways and hospitals and schools, then certainly I am for it.

This is my stand. I will not retreat from it. I will not compromise.

1952 speech by Noah S. “Soggy” Sweat, Jr., a young lawmaker from the U.S. state of Mississippi, on the subject of whether Mississippi should continue to prohibit (which it did until 1966) or finally legalize alcoholic beverages.
