Drove a 996 turbo today.

Was an awd cabriolet. What a nice car. Very docile , and easy to drive, but once you put your foot in it, it becomes serious pretty quick. I am now no longer shopping for a regular 996. I may have to save my lunch money a little longer . |
Yeah...
They are stupid fast, stupidly easy. |
Steal of the century right now
this one has 199,800 miles on it... they must be pretty good engines to go that far:eek: too high$$ RAC Performance - 2004 Porsche 911 Turbo - Stock# R1284
There's a guy on Rennlist who has something like 240,000 miles on his and the engine has never been opened up.
And They respond nicely to a little tuning:D
Not too much though if you want to keep the rods IN the case |
The Metzger engine is what all 996s should have had
I've heard that the stock rods and rest of bottom end are good for 600hp or so. That is one robust engine.
And $30k gets you one with well under 100k miles, not 200k miles.
Am I stupid for getting a 993 twin? My knees buckle each and every time I see them. I have been working on this deal for the past two years with this old guy. Very low mileage car. My plan is to drive it a few time a month.
I think the 993 twin is more of an investment car.... 996 is better for riding hard and putting away wet....
I refuse to allow myself to drive one, because if I do, I know it will be my new DD and I need something that gets good gas mileage.

If you want a raw, visceral turbo experience, I say get a 930. If you want insane speed combined with impossible ease, go for the water cooled car. If the 996 is too ugly, stretch for the 997 turbo. IMHO of course. |
I think the 993 is a much more sexier car, but for the money, the 996 is a better performer and cheaper. As far as looks, the 996 body style really suffers. I know, I know the car is a world beater, but its an ugly car. With each newer version of the 911 (or whatever number they use) they try to right the wrongs of the first 996 in an effort to return it to its previous state.

I want one bad too. I'm surprised at those prices, lower mileage cars around here are in the 55K range, lower miles but still. Cars are expensive in Canada.
