Any Phish fans out there?

I have not seen them live in nearly 20 years. Have not really even listened to them much in the last decade , but recently busted out some old CD's, and found I still enjoy them quite a bit.
I saw them live last at the Blossom in Cleveland in 93'. Hauled arse out there in my hopped up 74 vanagon with a bunch of freaky friends, going there again next Saturday with my lady, kid, and Biz partner (he is doing much better ) .
Not for everyone, but still a great band to see live.

They do put on a great show. I saw them all over New England in my college days and shortly after that. They were compared to Grateful Dead shows a lot in the day, but IMHO Phish were much better and more energetic live.

Enjoy the show!

What's worse than a drum circle at a phish concert?

What did the deadhead say after he quit smoking pot?
" Man, this band sucks "
I have heard them all. I have never participated in a drum circle, and I don't own any dream catchers, but I love a good jam band.

Yep!!! A buddy of mine has never seen 'em, and we were talking about it a couple of weeks ago. He also mentioned Steely Dan touring (neither of us have had that pleasure either) so I said "either one", but I'd opt for SD. I was gonna place an order for two $195 tix ('spensive, but OK), and the freaking service charge was nearly 100 and really pizzed me off...I think I'll hang out my "gone phishing" sign instead . I'm a "Fishhead" too...anybody know who I"m referring too?

ps: I've only seen Phish a couple of times...I hope they are "back in form"...

I like Phish.

But they are like a G-50 when compared to the 901 transmission of the Dead.

Nope...I figured RWebb might know. Like the GD, they were a "jamband" long before the term existed, and they had and even longer run (33 years) than the good 'ole GD. If one is comparing Phish from the early 90s to the GD "at that time", then I agree that Phish was mo better...now the Dead say between '72-74...no contest imo .

ps: I never saw the Dead, but this "fishhead" has LOTS of live shows of all three "taper friendly" bands.

I really tried to like Phish but their songs all sound the same... I can listen to them a little, but it's like reggae to me, a little too boring...

I've been to 8 or so Phish concerts. The first at Alpine Valley in '96, and the last at Alpine Valley in 2000.

I really enjoyed their early stuff, up to about Billy Breathes. I didn't really like the albums after that.

Phish Stories:

Alpine '96

Leaving from Naperville, my best friend decided to set the cruise control at 120 mph. We left late and arrived early. It was my best friend, me, and my girlfriend at the time. Good concert. Driving home, he set the cruise control at 120 again. I implored him to slow down, as we were leaving a Phish concert, it was 2 a.m., and we were Illinois drivers in Wisconsin. I kid you not, he turns off the cruise control, and we see the cherries. He clocked as at 93 mph, which was a "go to jail" speed for non-Wisconsin residents. We spent the next 3 hours going from ATM to ATM with the cop behind us, maxing out what we could withdraw to make the $300 bail. We got together about $260. He let us go as long as we promised to send a money order first thing Monday morning (which we did).

Alpine '99

Went to the Phish concert with Bob. Bob bought 6 hits of LSD at the concert. Bob decided the LSD was bunk, so he bought 6 more hits from someone else. As we were crowding into the concert, the LSD hit Bob, and Bob freaked out. I was about 170 lbs at the time. Bob was 280. He started running full-bore against the crowd crushing into the concert. I couldn't fight the crowd. He was gone.

So I went into the concert by myself. I sat by myself. The concert opened up with Ramble On. What did I see? A naked Bob dancing on the concourse. Then I saw a naked Bob getting tackled by security on the concourse. Then I saw a naked Bob slip out of the pile and start running and disappear into the crowd. I didn't see Bob again that night.

After the concert I went back to my car and waited. And waited. And waited. I waited until 3 a.m., and no Bob. Now I had other friends at the concert, (though I didn't see them, no one had cell phones then) so I figured he bummed a ride home with them. I got home around 5 a.m., and went straight to bed.

I am awakened at 7 a.m. by my parents. Bob is on the phone.

Bob: "Hey, dude, can you come pick me up?"

Me: "What happened to you."

Bob: "I remember having a lot of fun last night. I woke up in a ditch on the side of the Interstate in Milwaukee. My wallet was gone. My shoes were gone. My shirt was gone. My underwear was gone. For some reason I still had my shorts on. Dude. Are you going to come pick me up?"

Me: "No. Call your dad."

A little background. Bob had been going on benders all that summer, and this was like the tenth time he'd called me to bail him out. He'd gone on a few coke benders. He'd gone on a few opium benders. He'd gone on a few liquor benders. I was sick of being called to pick him up in some remote, dangerous location. It was costing me money I didn't have to go get him, and he kept promising that it "was the last time".

Alpine Valley 2000

I went with another friend. The concert sucked. It was obvious that at this point, the band wasn't getting along and it showed. There was no chatter with the audience, just half-assed renditions of songs.

I was also getting tired of the crowd...before the concert. I was finally understanding why Eric Cartman hated hippies so much. I used to think that hippies were some kind of special people that truly understood how the world worked. I guess one might think that when listening to hippies talk when also stoned. Suddenly I was seeing a bunch of self-absorbed rich kids playing dress up, getting high and spouting incoherent nonsense. There is no man. The corporations aren't colluding with the CIA to control our minds. It isn't as simple as smoking pot and living off the land.

Lemme guess Chris...Bob is the "ex-friend" that you've posted about over the years that you've attempted to distance yourself from...I can sure see why! What's the old joke (I think it was Bill Cosby) about how "cocaine enhances one's personality"...Bill's punch line: yeah, but what if you're an azzwhole ? Rest assured, this greybeard ain't gonna be dosing or 'shrooming at a Phish show...it's all about the music for me anymore. I once asked a buddy of mine who attended many a Dead show "back in the day" about the "enhancers"...his reply, he didn't after a while (the drive home, etc.), and he didn't miss them one bit...the music itself "took him there". BTDT, and I can totally relate...

ps: I've seen WAY more alcohol induced obnoxious behavior at college football games, etc. than I've EVER seen at "shows", and I've been to more than a few. Some folks go for the "event", some just go for the party, and let's face it...college students and tour rat "fried pies" don't live in the "real world" anyways

Phish. One of my employees is a follower and I have never got it. I would estimate she has gone to 2-3 shows a summer since she has worked for me, sometimes driving 8-10 hours for the closest show. She is married and has two small kids. Gets a van and goes with her husband and a bunch of guys. Sleeps in a tent in the mud. No shower for the weekend. I just don't get it. The play some of their songs on some of the XM stations I listen to. Pretty nondescript, kind of like movie background music. Not something that inspired me to jump in a car and become a follower. My theory it the band is just the reason to do what she wants to do and not the actual music. I'm sure once phish is gone, (like the dead) someone will come in to fill the hippie lifestyle void that she needs. Not thats there is anything wrong wth it and if anything in this world makes you want to get up and face another day, more power to you. She said when she goes to these concerts, she feels like "she's home". Not sure what that means.

I'm a huge phish fan (love the dead, too). I've probably seen about 40 phish shows since 1992. I agree that 1999 through 2010 were rough years for the band, IMHO, but since 2011 they are back in form and melting faces again. Not everyone's cup of tea, for sure, but they certainly are mine.

Caught them a few months back. I really enjoyed the first set but the second was too jammy for my taste.

It's odd that I love the Dead, String Cheese and many other Jam Bands but don't care for excessive jamming.
