seems like a lot of us have jeeps as a primary driver

Interesting note-

I've nearly always driven a jeep as my primary daily driver, and noticed recently that it looks like many of others on this board do the same!

Just picked up a new 2013 wrangler sahara, 4 door-and love it. Of course totally different from the 911, but in some ways, also quirky like the Porsche.

Josh D 03-29-2013 02:25 PM

I've driven Jeeps for years as daily drivers. Now I'm just down to two and they are mostly for recreation or part time use. I did daily drive the '95 Wrangler daily this list winter for a couple months while I repaired the transmission in the 911. Here's some pics of past and current Jeeps:

My '95. I've owned it since new and have performed all modifications to it. It just past 100K miles!

http://i906.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/100_2293.jpg

My '71 J2000 Gladiator. I've owned it since '02. It was a neglected beater I bought for $600. It now sports a well built AMC 360 that I built, Dodge disc braked front D44 axle, lift using ScoutII springs, and a bunch of other goodies!

http://i906.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/DSCN2950.jpg

This was my '88 Grand Wagoneer. It was a bone stock 100K mile truck when I bought it. I did the lift, wheels and tires, early grill and some bolt on engine mods. It was my daily driver for about three years. Sold it when I moved back to AZ and had to deal with emissions:(

I've also had a '56 Willys Wagon, a '47 & '48 Willys pickup, and a '95 Jeep Grand Cherrokee that my wife used to DD.

I love Jeeps. I'd happily daily drive a Rubicon Unlimited but the things hold their value incredibly well.

R K T 03-29-2013 03:08 PM

Always wanted a Jeep and bought my first one three months ago.
I thought the "slippery slope" was bad with the Porsche.....there is a million aftermarket goodies to spend money on for the Jeep!!!

Hard-Deck 03-29-2013 03:52 PM

My wife's daily is a 2008 Wrangler Sahara. It is our fourth jeep and she will drive nothing else.

This speaks to me...I gotta stop clicking on this stuff as anything nearby has been consumed by salt.:(

I've been daily driving Jeeps since my 1988 Comanche! Had 3 Cherokees, 1 YJ and 5 TJ's... still enjoying my '05 Unlimited daily. :)

I'm transitioning to this as my DD from my 993 (which I'll be selling):

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1364608195.jpg

I've been driving it/restoring it/ mildly modding it since January.

VINMAN 03-29-2013 06:00 PM

Josh, that Grand Wagoneer is gorgeous! Those are going for big $$ nowadays.

kach22i 03-29-2013 06:05 PM

I've come close to buying a Jeep a handful of times, closest was three years ago.

I still have a hankering, currently want one of those Jeep Brute pick-ups.

Dantilla 03-29-2013 06:24 PM

There is a Rubicon sitting in my garage. 4th Jeep I've had. A Cherokee and three Wranglers.

stogie25 03-29-2013 08:16 PM

I bought my Jeep new in 1997. It has been a work in progress since.

Jeep Gladiators are awesome.

porwolf 03-29-2013 11:06 PM

My daily driver, almost a jeep and it runs and runs. First engine, never touched, first transmission. 1982, almost a million miles!

onewhippedpuppy 03-30-2013 03:22 AM

I really need to just avoid these threads, it gives me way too many ideas.

fastfredracing 03-30-2013 03:42 AM

I've had a few, and have been using Grand Cherokees as daily drivers for about 5 years now. I've been tempted to lift them , but I always talk myself out of it, and put my effort into the p cars instead.
They are super handy for a guy like me. They go anywhere in the snow, I can put the family in one, and drive to the beach if I want, I can fill them with tools for rental house work, and I have hauled engines, rear axles, and all sorts of auto parts/supplies in them
Here is my last shop beater. Sold it for $900.00 with 285,000 miles on the clock. 3 transmissions, but the original 318 ran like a swiss watch, and never even had a valve cover removed. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1364643219.jpg
It was starting to get really rusty, and the interior was gross, and all torn up, so , I replaced it with this one, another shop beater, but this one is a little nicer. It has 175 k on the clock. It was my ex employees , and it was his pride and joy when he bought it. I had to put new bearings in the front diff, a few front end parts, and a rad, but this one runs real nice as well. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1364643552.jpg
I also briefly had a real nice 99 Grand Cherokee that we used as a family car, but I sold it off, it was too nice, I prefer beaters.
On my bucket list, would be to build a cj, wrangler, or rubicon. someday.....

Rick V 03-30-2013 04:34 AM

I had one about twenty years ago and DD'd it, I loved that thing.
Here is a pic of when I first got it. 79 5, it ended up sitting on 35's, lived in the low grounds of the James River and always had fishing poles in it.

Chocaholic 03-30-2013 05:33 AM

Interesting reading. My neighbor is a Ford and Chrysler dealer. Says people that are loyal to Jeep will rarely consider a Chrysler, yet the same company and parts bin.

KNS 03-30-2013 12:10 PM

I've heard that Chrysler is trying to move the brand up-market to become more Range Rover like and get away from the utilitarian aspect. I hope that's not true.
I quess there's more money in plush leather and Nav systems.

vash 03-30-2013 12:20 PM

They are going to have a few diesel jeeps soon right?

I've had three. Two CJ 7's and a Cherokee. Fun rigs for sure. My sis snatched the family 85 jeep Scrambler from my parents. I worked on that thing and kept it up. Whatever. I'm not telling her where I hid the box of smog parts.

I would like to have a XJ like that. Cool picture.

I have had and daily driven a 1994 Grand Cherokee, 1997 Grand Cherokee, and currently a 1999 Grand Cherokee. Also have a 1995 XJ for parts stashed away waiting to be parted out. There is nothing better in the snowy mountains than a Jeep. They climb like billy-goats.:)

This was a great truck and got used appropriately. It was absolutely rust free having spent it's entire life in Albuquerque. Last known location is Santa Fe, NM.

just got back to this-

I picked up a new sahara unlimited a few weeks ago- it's my 3rd, and they've always been great utility/all purpose vehicles

I agree, the new ones are getting pretty plush...then again, I did get leather and nav so I guess I'm getting that way too....

Mine's a bit of a sleeper! Old and patina on the outside, fresh and modified on the inside.

I guess big money is a relative thing but I consider the $20K of really nice early broncos "big". Do really nice GW's bring that or more? Looked at a couple on fleaBay and they seemed to be a LOT more affordable...but some didn't meet reserve at well under $10K

RWebb 04-01-2013 01:52 PM

I dare somebody to post a pic of the new Cherokee!

I paid $3K for mine. Gal was asking $3800. It had 99K miles on it at the time. The clearcoat was flaking and there was some splitting in the drivers seat leather. Everything else worked, including the A/C that was one of the coldest I can remember on an older car.

I upgraded the ignition system, put an Edelbrock Performer intake and Holley Truck Avenger carb and did the lift, wheels and tires.

Put 20K miles on it in 3 years and sold it for $2800.:(

There's an outfit in Texas that buys clean, low mileage originals, goes through them, and sells them for around $20K.

Wow! Hugh Hefner's a member of Pelican BBS AND he drives an FJ60? I'm impressed!

Rednine11 04-01-2013 05:51 PM

I have two Jeep Wranglers
I love them

steveo12345 04-01-2013 06:55 PM

Four wheel drive is a must for my daily driver. Switched from Jeeps to Subbies about 10 years ago. Would never go back. Maintenance and reliability have been much better. Also gotta love the Subbie flat 6. Pretty bullet proof from my experience. YMMV.
