Where do you live in L.A.? My LA is a nice place to live and I never see crime of any kind, much less shootings. Knock on wood, (it can happen anywhere), but so far, so good. Granted, I've only been here for 30 years.
Chicago is a beautiful city but has its ghettos, I'm sure. I've never had anything but a good time there. Unless you're some dipschit Clark Griswald driving around lost in the hood at night, I doubt that their crime rate will directly affect you. If you're out trying to score crack after midnight, it might get dangerous. Score your crack during daylight hours. |

My dad was born in Chicago. I was at a trade show in Rosemont several years ago and I went down to the hotel desk with a map and asked the guy at the desk where abouts 2137 North Cleveland would be. He asked why I wanted to know? So I told him. He said "I wouldn't go down there, That's Crip territory and I'm Black" So I took his advise and stayed in my hotel.

That's just south of Blues & Kingston Mines on N Halsted. I am dating myself, but that used to be OK as long as you were drunk & dis-shelved at 3 AM (and you took cabs everywhere).
![]() I haven't been there in years now - except for the hideous airport. Ian

Nothing wrong with the area around Kingston Mines. Great place to hear blues music.

It's much worse in all respects. Once great taverns, eats are leaving or have left. Talk to musicians who enjoy the late night entertaining but now worry leaving or have had vans and equipment stolen... often... or worse, some beat to schit! Gold Coast crime is normal. Michigan Ave. robberies, too many bothersome scam pandhandlers and freaks. BTW: The cost of everything is triple from just ten years ago. Then you have the routine gang and dissorders on the beautiful lakefront. Cops shutting down beaches on the hottest days, etc. I've seen some nice baseball bat beatings between gangs during a beautiful Sunday while families are picnicking. A few peaceful surfers get arrested for surfing on a closed beach... I mean c'mon now!
Make it what you want but do be more cautious and don't look flashy. There's still some awesome museums, architecture and places of entertainment worth visiting but as mentioned above, not worth staying.

Yessir. The older folks in the audio industry (like me) still warmly remember the annual trek to Chicago for CES in June. Great food. Great music. Great bars. Wonderful Midwestern females. And walk-able - although Kingston Mines was a stretch.

I have heard great things about their museums.
I actually live in a suburb of LA - but for all intents and purposes for the rest of the world I say LA. And I really didn;t mean to diss Los Angeles, tho I suppose I did.

There are legitimate precautions to take in any large city as far as knowing your surroundings and areas, etc., plus general common sense situational awareness. That sort of goes for anywhere.
You need to separate that from the *scared rural-dweller who only reads about crime in the big city but has never been there except for once in 1992 and they were really scared* advice. My Mom was once asking me about the murder statistics of Los Angeles, back when they were actually pretty high, approx. 20 years ago. Even then, almost all murders occurred miles and miles away from anywhere I ever was at night. I had to explain to her that Los Angeles county is bigger than Minnesota/Wisconsin/Iowa/North and South Dakota/Montana and Wyoming put together in terms of population. And that if there was one newspaper for all of those states combined, there would be 10 murders a night on weekends in that paper. And that newspapers only report bad news. You will never see an article that is titled, "Millions of People Got Aong Today", or "Most People Treated Each Other Kindly". ![]() If you only read lurid crime stories in the paper, it can seem like any big city is just one big riot every night with stabbings, shootings and raping and pillaging. Some of the less traveled members here have formed their opinions thusly.

The social experiment that was Chicago has just about run its course. They ran out of money decades ago, and have just about run out of other people's money to spend. Businesses are fleeing the state in droves, as is anyone who can afford to leave.
Remember the run-down Chicago of the late 70's/early 80's? You know, the Jane Byrne/Harold Washington era? It's back.

As has been said, that's not the whole city, or even most of it. But my family in KY does the same thing - they hear about a shooting in Chicago and figure the bullets just barely missed me. Getting shot in Chicago is millions-to-one odds in even the worst neighborhoods.

2137 cleveland is pretty much in the heart of one of the richer areas of the city. Definitely not a bad area. |

My wife and I lived in Chicago and loved it.
Gimme a break....not exactly an 'adventure traveler' are you? Christ, the media has everyone scared of their own shadows in this country..... Chicago is a fantastic town.

Chicago is great, Heart of America.
My wife and kids drink in the culture. They just got back from a 2 week vacation to the mid west. Chicago is a Big City (The second biggest I think) bad stuff happens in the big city. I used up my luck in the big city. I don't do the big city much. They saw things we can't show them them here in the frontier. I appreciate the the middle of nowhere because of the city. You must see it all to know!
