Why the increase? With a staggering statistic such as that, there must be something science is looking at.

I didn't know about the blue light thing and I'm fresh out of blue bulbs. Have to plan....

Well, practically speaking it's not necessarily an increase in the number of people who are autistic, it's an increase in the number of people who are diagnosed.

Well, let's not get into thresholds and all that. I'm sure a mild form of autism is readily more detectable nowadays. My ADHD was not recognized in the 50's. And I was a classic. Over the top classic. And they had no freakin' clue. Now they single out hundreds of adolescents as hyperactive.

Doing some reading this afternoon about autism and learning more will be my contribution to the day.

"Diagnosis" includes the doctor. It's not like you sit in a machine and some kind of printout comes out that says "autism."

As research continues and awareness grows, doctors are more informed and prepared to properly 'diagnose' diseases that may have gone previously 'undiagnosed' and didn't even technically exist in previous years.

Milt's example is a good one. Before it was en vogue to diagnose ADHD, it was called "That there's a Wild Child."

Back in hs, I visited a class of about 12-15 "autistic" elementary school kids (in my first grade classroom ironically)....all of them seemed totally oblivious to any outside stimuli whatsoever. Methinks the "clinical definition" has changed a bit over the years. And who would've thunk that teenage boys have "energy to burn"??? Live and learn....

We have one on the spectrum, he's grown out of a lot of it though. Diet can bring great results too, like zero gluten.

Way to go Zeke. Another person who will understand that when my child melts down it is not because I am a bad mom or my son is a brat... He might be melting because of too much stimulus going on around him...

We've got one that is on the scale as well. Seems to be getting better with age. The more I read about it , the more I understand his behavior. I am sure that I would have been diagnosed as well, if they tested the same way they do today.

Education is good!....

My wife and I were sitting on the couch a couple of years ago and she was reading an article in Time magazine. After a little while she turns to me and says, "This is YOU!".

She was reading an article about a guy that has Asperger's.

Since then, I've visited a doctor, done lots of reading, and taken several tests. I'm 51 years old and have always felt "out of place", and have even commented to my wife that I feel like I'm on the wrong planet. (Ironically, there is a website for people on the spectrum called Wrong Planet - Autism Community).

There isn't a cure for Autism, but educating yourself about it makes it a little easier to deal with.

There was a kid in the store yesterday that purposefully blocked my path. He looked perfectly normal and of course my old grumpy initial response (internal) was WTF??? I didn't say anything but thought that it was odd. After reading some of the above links, it could have been the young man was autistic??? Interesting reads above, certainly makes me think about some behavior. Thanks for posting the information.

My daughter teaches Autistic kids, mostly very young kids.

I have learned all I know from her and I am amazed at the various ways this affliction manifests itself. It's tough dealing with Autism but making the public more aware would go a long way in understanding it.

It's not easy work but she finds it very rewarding.
