That was strange

I just got a call on my cell phone from a company called Auto Sport. Here's their web site.

AutoSport Catalog - Auto Accessories, Floor Mats, Seat Covers, Car Covers, & all weather floor mats.

They were confirming that I bought floor mats and they knew that I had a 94 E320 wagon, which the mats were for.

I've never even heard of Auto Sport. Certainly didn't buy a set of mats, already have them.

Only thing I can think of is they bought a list and are making calls banking on confusion. Never asked for payment, I just said to cancel the order.

I just don't get how they knew:
Cell phone
Full name
Car year, make, model

Strange.

the call from # is 434-817-8410

No, Rick Lee did not hack my account.

I will usually get a confirmation e-mail with a tracking number.

Sounds sketchy how they got so much personal information on you, eg: cell number, make and model of car, name. 434 seems to be Virginia. Maybe a prank or a hack.

Couple of questions. Did you talk to a live person or was it a recording? Second, did they say you had bought mats from them, or just that you had bought mats?

My thinking on this depends on your answers. If it was a "confirmation call" to confirm you had bought mats but didn't state it was from their company, then I think it's a type of solicitation from a purchased list, as you suspect.

If they said it was a confirmation of a purchase from them, then I, personally, would be more concerned. I would call them and ask to talk to someone of authority and say you suspect you are a victim of identity theft. I would ask them to tell you the details of the order, the date it was made, how it was made (phone or internet), and method of payment (which credit card, for example--I doubt if they'd give you the number over the phone but you can ask if they have the number.) How they respond to those questions will tell you if it's a marketing ploy or not. If they really had an order from you, they should be very cooperative in helping you in your possible identity theft. If not, they will give you a bit of a run around and maybe even admit they just bought your information.

it was a live woman, I'd say middle-aged, a little Southern drawl.

She was calling to confirm the order for some mats, that's when I asked where I bought the mats from, and she said Auto Sport, and I'm not 100% if she said she was from Auto Sport, just that I bought the mats from there.. According to her, I bought mats for a 94 E320 wagon from Auto Sport.

I tried calling the number twice today and it only rang and rang, and rang.

identify theft would suck.

But what I don't understand is the purchase of the mats for my car.

I'll try calling them tomorrow, but the online store phone # listed and the one that called me. Auto Sport is in VA and 434 is VA.

Okay, just to get things clear, you did buy mats for your car, correct? If so, how long ago was it and did you purchase them on line? I'm thinking that Auto Sport may be the corporate or holding company name for the place from which you bought the mats--I sometimes see charges on my cc bill that have a different name than the "store" from which I made the purchase. If that's the case, they would have all the details of the transaction and may be following up. They did not ask for payment but in your OP it sounded like it was an outstanding order that was to be filled. Is that the case, or did you just assume so? I think it's a good idea to try and call and talk directly to someone just to get it clear.

I'm sorry, been a long day, I should have been more clear. I didn't buy any mats from anyone. This was an out of the blue call.

I'm calling them tomorrow.

That's what I originally thought. BTW, I didn't mean to imply that you are a victim of ID theft in my other post, just that you could use that as a ploy to draw information from the company. Now that it's clear you didn't purchase any mats, it would be important to confirm whether or not that company had an actual order and, if so, when it was made and how it was "paid" for. If you're not successful in contacting them tomorrow, you might consider a call to your cc's to verify if any charges have been made to Auto Sport.

It's probably nothing, but I would keep an eye on your bank account transactions, and be prepared to change CC#s and checking acct #s.

Somebody hacked some other supplier's database. Phishing. I hate this new world of tech sometimes.

Someone broke into Vudu and stole their hd's. Now they're telling everyone that if you used their password anywhere else, change it everywhere. PITA

Update, talked with the AutoSport people and someone, believe it or not, bought them for me as a gift with a Discover card ending in 7907. They were calling because the billing address was listed as the ship to address, in effect the wrong billing address.

The CS person neglected to say all of this yesterday.

Mark tells me he doesn't have a Discover card (who does?) so good confirmation of my original thesis.

I guess I'll have to wait for one of my friends to contact me.

I was thinking it could be a gift from spouse or family.

Maybe it was Lubey. Instead of starting a thread about what a great guy you are he figured he'd just buy you some floormats.
