Worst Driver?

Whose name would definitely come up in any bar conversation on who was actually the worst pro racer?

IROC 04-18-2013 12:46 PM

Andrea de Crasheris. ;)

herr_oberst 04-18-2013 12:54 PM

What was the name of the driver that crashed at Monaco denying Ayrton Senna the race win and McLaren the perfect season? Schlessher?

URY914 04-18-2013 01:00 PM

Eddie Cheever. I never understood how he stayed in F1 so long. He wasn't bad, but just never produced anything until he won Indy '98 during the sorry azz IRL days.

Aragorn 04-18-2013 01:17 PM

Was "tora tora tora Takagi" the driver Michael Andretti referred to as the moving chicane? He was Japanese and raced in CART in the mid to late 90's and was a slow moving accident. Could have been Hattori.

The Dentist in Indy Car, Miller, he wasn't the best driver out there either.

L8Brakr 04-18-2013 01:29 PM

Of the last decade or so......

Milka Duno????

She may have had other skills though

afterburn 549 04-18-2013 02:45 PM

Anyone in modern day Nasty Car Driver.....all they can do is turn..left, and do flips off off the roof.
And cry like babies

Embraer 04-18-2013 03:21 PM

scott speed, slick racin gardner, willy t ribbs.

RacerX1166 04-18-2013 04:23 PM

My personal pet peeve bad driver has to be Buddy Lazier. Couldn't hack it in Champ Car but won the 500 once Tony George killed the sport.

Most unlucky has to go to Roberto Guerrero.

And bounce the car off the rumble strips at Watkins Glen 3-wheeling in a full drift right and left. Nah, they can't drive.

AFA stock cars go, the worst driver was Gilles Villeneuve on the road course.

Overall, Buckshot Jones may have spent more money for nothing in stock cars. But there have been a few of those.

????

Could come up with a few excuses and far from ever considering him from being the worst. Cheever in F1 turbo era in the rain at Detroit - WOW! I'd like see Vettel or Hambone dice Cheever in the same cars, track and rain.

You're comparing a guy that ran in 143 F1 races and never won one, than ran 82 CART race and never won one and ran 77 IRL where he finally won 5 races to two F1 World champs because of one drive in the rain at one race? Sure why not.....

onewhippedpuppy 04-19-2013 04:23 AM

How about most hype vs least substance?

I posted "de Crasheris" somewhat in jest, but then went and checked his wiki page and he might actually be the worst:

Quote:

Andrea de Cesaris (born 31 May 1959) is an Italian former race car driver. He started 208 Formula One Grands Prix but never won; his is the longest career without a race victory. A string of accidents early in his career earned him the nickname 'Andrea de Crasheris'.[1] Though the nickname stuck, he became a more reliable driver in his later career.
...and:

Quote:

In 1981 de Cesaris, partly due to his Marlboro connections, landed a seat at McLaren. He managed to finish only 6 of the 14 races he started, with a sixth place at Imola as best result. This was not enough to convince the resurgent McLaren team to keep him on. It was at this point in his career that the nickname "Andrea de Crasheris" was coined. The team was so worried that he would crash the car to the point that they withdrew his car from the Holland Grand Prix in Zandvoort after he qualified 13th.
and finally:

Quote:

He participated in 214 grands prix, debuting on September 28, 1980. He achieved 5 podiums, one pole position, and scored a total of 59 championship points, but remains the driver with the most GP starts (208) to his name without a win. He also holds records for the most consecutive non-finishes, 18 across 1985 and 1986 (although many of these were mechanical failures), as well as the most successive non-finishes in a single season, 12 in 1987. Similarly, no driver has had more than his 14 DNFs in a 16-race season.

And yet ALL of them can out drive YOU. Too funny.

911SauCy 04-19-2013 05:22 AM

Aside from Danica...Kyle Petty?

tchanson 04-19-2013 09:20 AM

Yuji Ide.

Granted, he had to drive a Super Aguri, but it takes a special talent to get your FIA Super License revoked after just 4 races.

Did you meant to say Gilles son, Jacques?

Hero Matsu-s-h-i-t-a. What do I win? :D

flipper35 04-19-2013 02:34 PM

Michael Andretti was disapointing considering the lineage.

herr_oberst 04-19-2013 03:13 PM

^ Well, then Marco must have Mario considering cyanide pills.

How can you say that???

Cart/Indy record:
317 Starts
42 Wins
32 Poles
1 Championship

what a bum!

Milka Duno was black flagged (for not keeping minimum pace) in more races than in ones she finished.

herr_oberst 04-20-2013 04:21 PM

The argument could be made that Paul Tracy might be one of the worst - my theory is, someone with that much natural talent and raw speed should have won A LOT more races but he took himself out of contention with ill-advised, boneheaded moves.
(And I'm a fan. I think he should have been declared the winner of that infamous Indy 500)

Definitely her. Watched her do a whole IRL race on the apron moving at half the speed of the rest of the field. I knew why she was there, but can't figure out why the IRL let her out on track.

Ah yes, the infamous FIRL 499.5. Can't let a Champcar boy win now, can we?

+1
Honored this year at Portland Historics. And for us Porsche fans - footnote: Won the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1986 and 1987 driving a Porsche 962 with Al Holbert and Derek Bell

intakexhaust 04-25-2013 12:16 PM

OK, I'll mix it up a little and seem to be defending a few drivers mentioned.

The OP is talking 'professional driver' and believe or not, the great late #34 Walter Payton raced professionally.

His heart was in it but a real wild man on the track. I'll put him in the running as worst pro driver. A big time shunt in 1993 during a Trans-Am event practice at Road America ended his racing career.

Zeke 04-25-2013 12:36 PM

Re: Guerrero, he has a beautiful and talented family.

http://blog.indianapolismotorspeedwa...17-300x225.jpg

Not so unlucky after all.

The Guerrero flock has grown now. Marco, 24, is a mechanical engineer who enjoys working with the technical part of race cars — and doing the Baja 1000 with his dad. Evan, 21, is graduating from Lehigh as a biology major and is headed to medical school. Haley, 17, is a high school junior who is already being recruited by colleges for their soccer programs.

“Looks like we’ll have a Dr. Guerrero in the family,’ Roberto said. “And mention Haley because people leave her out of stories, and I get in trouble.”

I've seen his wife driving around SJC for years with the license plate, 92Pole, or something similar. I don't recall the year. I've always hoped to run into Roberto and chat with him, but never have. Cool dude.

Last year I was flipping stations and saw a roundy-round race on the tube, and Takuma "kamikazi" Sato was surprisingly in the lead.

I told my son, "that's weird. He usually crashes well before the half-way point of the race".

I had no sooner finished that statement when Sato plowed into the wall. The only question is will he just take himself out or will he take others with him?
Sure he won last week's LB grand pricks, but that's only because all the other drivers were hiding from him.

In F1 he crashed or was DQ'd in almost half the races he entered.
Bonzai!
