paint guns
no reply in the paint forum.
i am looking at this for a paint gun: Sharpe Finex FX3000 HVLP Paint Gun i am only painting the front end on my mercedes and i may go ahead and paint my 325is. yes, i have painted before but not in a long time. i did use the same gun for paint and primer at home, but when i had access to a shop, they had separate guns. i was thinking of getting a cheap $50 primer gun....but then do i really need one?

IMO, the Sharpe is a very good gun, and that seems to be a good price.
I spray my primer from the same gun that I spray topcoat. Make sure you have an inline air dryer - at least a motorguard M30 trap. Moisture in the air will affect your paint results.

When I shot paint professionally I had several paint guns. SATA Jet NR 95 w/1.4mm for most base/clear and high metallic paints, NR92 w/1.8 for primer and change out to 1.4 for etching primer. I also had a cheap MacTools HVLP exclusively for small jobs and primer that I could leave etch or primer in the cup for hours... These were high end at the time but you can pick up a good used one for decent money... Lots on flea bay. If your a DIY I suspect any of the afore mentioned guns will work ok, but personally I like to buy the best tools if I'm doing a job more then once or twice knowing I can always sell them later and get decent money for them. If you can find one of the SATA used in good condition it might be a good buy for good tech on a budget... I've tried some of the cheaper guns (<$100) and they just don't have the precision that the quality tools do. You get what you pay for applies as it does for most other tools. It's the fit and finish of the tool that really makes the finish product superior (laying down a lot of paint in a fine and controllable manner), not clogging or spitting out clumps of mettalic or dripping for the nozzle and the ability to prescicely adjust the fan and quantity of paint you want for a specific job (high volume - low pressure). As well as the ability to break the gun down for cleaning with the parts fitting together in a precise manner time and again. iMO the cheap guns just can't do this consistently over time of usage... HTH

Thanks guys. Good info.
What would be better for all around primer/single stage/enamal paint: 1.4 or 1.5? I've been using a Lowes paint gun for years for general work, but would like to get something to paint a car with better results. EDIT - Looked at the link and that one comes with multple tips. Most of my painting now is "industrial" - therefore I use one of the cheap-o HF guns with a 1.4 tip. This is fine when you are throwing primer and cheap paint at gearboxes, steel work-stands, etc.
Late last fall, I painted a Cessna with the HF guns. Everything 911Freak said was present: dribbling, spitting, occasional "WTF" moments, etc. I knew better, but was being a cheap bastard. I know T77911S said he has already ordered a good gun, so I put this out there as advice to others: Don't be a cheap bastard. Buy a good gun if you want good results. edit: I used a Sherwin Williams turbine HVLP gun similar to this one about 11 years ago to paint a Fiat. I was really happy with the atomization and the spray quality. Have any of you other guys tried something like this?
