Lawson Shotgun
Believed to be Spanish made, brand name is Lawson, 26" bbls, 28 Gauge. Anyone ever heard of these shotguns? The pics that I have seem to show decent quality, and I know that the "better" Spanish made shotguns are pretty decently made.

There has been one - perhaps on auto relist - for a while on GB, possibly the same one. Sheet looks the same.
Lawson Arms 28 Gauge SxS Nice Engraving Full Mod : Side By Side Shotguns at GunBroker.com There is a "Made in Spain" visible in its stamps.

Spanish shotguns are hit or miss. Most were made in the Palencia area in the Basque country of northern Spain. There were many small or "guild" type makers scattered all through the area and some were very good and of high quality. Others were cheaply made and distributed by all kinds of importers with under many different names. A few years ago, a company bought up all of the smaller Spanish gun makers and formed a conglomerate called Diarms. After that, the quality of Spanish shotguns greatly improved. It sounds like the one you are talking about is an older one made by one of the smaller companies. It should be an ok buy if it is in good shape. In today's market, $300 sounds about right. I'm not a big fan of Spanish guns. AYA is the only one I would even get close to. Too many variables as to the quality of manufacture.

Look on the flats of the barrels and the water table look at the markings and see if any of these markings attached are there.
IPSC Gasteiz: Punzones Españoles / Spanish Marks IPSC Gasteiz: Punzones Españoles / Spanish Marks these are makers marks from SP makers past and present. I betting Jesus made your gun...

Shotgun maker
I bet you are correct. The GIB cartouche is plainly visible! Normally, I would not be particularly interested in a shotgun made in Spain. However, I have wanted a small gauge double for sometime and this one is a 28 gauge piece. Looks like it might be
fun! Fred C. Quote:

well if you can get this on the cheap..that's good. I have a deHaan .410 and paid $1000.00 for it. The CZ is about the same money. We have one at the shop for $1195.00. Nice guns but compared to a $400 Spanish lady I would go for the $400. Hell you can't by a stevens 311 .410 for that money. Ammo is about the same price for both the 28 ga. and the .410 cal.

OK Targa, any time you have a 28 ga SxS available, you let me know and I'll take it off your hands. The Boy Scout Troop Leader who is responsible for my son making Eagle is an Upland Game adict who lusts for a 28 GA SxS, particularly a CZ USA Bobwhite or gun of similar ilk. If you should have such a gun, I would purcahse it and it would find its way into the hands of said Scout Leader, perhaps as a going away line after Alex's Eagle ceremony where I thrust a case in his hands and say "Oh, you forgot this".

In the 3 years I have been at this shop, I have never seen one come through used. I had a CZ 28 SXS. Sold it. I did not like the way the screw in chokes made the barrels flare at the ends. Very distracting. Like looking down a blunderbuss. Now if they had fixed chokes, say M&IC, I would buy it again. When it comes to small gauge shotguns I will take a .410 cal every time. But that is just me. Both the CZ bobwhite and ringneck in 28 Ga. are screw in chokes. Both are fine guns. I can source one for you if you like, but be warned they are not cheap as I stated above. Look at Dehaan guns as well. DeHaan Shotguns Home Page

For better or for worse.......
it's mine! Sent off the $$$$ and FFL form this morning. Wound up having to pay a bit more than I wanted, but not much. Should have it in hand before the end of the week.
I also found a source of Winchester AA 28 gauge shells for $12 a box. That's a bit cheaper than I thought they would go for, especially now. The Win AA 28 gauge shells are loaded to 1300 fps with 1 oz of #7.5 shot. Should be "effective" on both skeets and birds! Will post some pictures once I have it home.

Time for the reloading set up.
See if you can get some all brass shells from Old Western Scrounger or similar...

Nice shotspoon Fred. She looks in great shape. David has done up two old side by sides for me. There is just something about them.

Sellers remorse........
Talked to the shotgun's previous owner this afternoon. Seemed to be a nice guy, but he was having trouble getting over the fact that his shotgun did not bring big bucks! I hope that it is as nice as he thinks it is!

Small gauge.......
Picked up the 28 gauge double today. It has extractors, not ejectors (fine with me), automatic safety and the receiver is lightly case hardened with some simple but reasonably well done engraving. The barrels, opening lever, safety and trigger guard appear to be rust blued. The stock fits the metal quite nicely, actually much better than I had hoped. The action does not appear to have much wear, still opening a bit stiffly. The stock is just a bit short for me so I might just have to replace the butt plate with a rubber pad. The wood is a light to medium brown with cut checkering that unfortunately got filled in when the stock was finished. I may have to break out the checkering tool and clean it up a bit. But, as they say, the proof is in the pudding so a trip to the range will have to happen as soon as possible! I even lucked into a couple of cases of Winchester AA 28 gauge shells for a great price!

Good for you. Shoot it before you start to clean up the checkering. Remember one line at a time one stroke per line....repeat if needed.
best of luck! Have fun!
