Is money the primary reason people go into administration?

I don't think so, but what are your experiences or thoughts?

Those who can, do.
Those who can't, become management.
Those who can't manage, become administration.

I think money is the primary reason to go into administration. But I also think a lot of adminisitrative types begin to enjoy the 'superiority' and authority of supervision once they get there.

OTOH, I've talked to a lot of people who hate being in management but can't bring themselves to take the pay cut to go bck down into the ranks.

A lot has to do with the culture of the organization.

In my experience, the top salesman makes more than the managers. I does make for some interesting comments...

In my humble opinion they do it for:

a) power trip
b) lack of skills doing actual work
c) lack of personality
d) all of above

Some may do it for the money - but they are the exception.

At the last server job I had, there were managers who sometimes picked up server shifts for the tips. They had to be a top server to get into mgt. Once they realized the pay cut, they wanted to supplement their income by waiting tables again.

At my current job, I know of one or two managers who worked their way up. The rest were all hired from the outside. Unfortunately, you can't be an account manager at my company and make more than your boss. Just about impossible.

Not in our Company. Middle managers and administrators make less money.

In my experience they do it because they enjoy the power trip. The ones that get promoted from within the Company are normally useless 'hands on'.

Then once they get promoted they ***** about the money...

Wow, such negativity...

Just because someone was hired from the outside doesn't mean they didn't work their way up.

Are their bad managers/administrators? Of course.

Are there bad worker bees? Of course.

I hear a lot of jealousy and envy in the responses. Check your foolish generalizations at the door to add credibility to your opinions.

People go into management for a wide range of reasons. Some are great, some suck. Some of the roles pay a ton of money, some don't.

I'm not saying they didn't. But it sends a message to the folks who've been there a while that they have no chance of advancement, and that makes them start looking for jobs elsewhere.

The latest VP we hired comes from totally outside our industry. It will take him a solid year of touring our offices and going out on meetings with AMs to figure out what we do and how it all works. I know I'm going to get voluntold to take him on client meetings somewhere and I fear the day. My clients will have no respect for a stranger who tags along and has no idea how things work. On his first visit to one of our regional offices, he fired a manager who was one of the two I know who worked their way up to that position, having started at the bottom in our company. Not saying she didn't deserve it. But it has people looking at other options now.

Hey no sense in attacking people here.

It's just a discussion.

Oh wait....you're not admin are you?

Nevermind.....

Of course I am and I didn't attack anyone. Did you read some of the foolish generalizations?

I worked my way up and really enjoy my role. I've never forgotten where I came from and know that I get the best from people by demonstrating care, respect, and authenticity in every interaction. I do it because I love the challenge, complexity, and opportunity to meet people. I also don't mind the paycheck which is substantial. There are some of us who are very good at what we do and are therefore able to attract great talent to our business.

My apologies if you took it personally. My quote was a variation of the old joke that those who can do, those who can't teach, those who can't teach teachers (as laughingly told by several college profs I know).

Unfortunately, from my experience, most managers
- have a very severe memory loss once they come out of the rank and file
- let the title go to their heads and become attached to the power and control rather than the challenge of helping the troops achieve the company goals.

I have found that as people go higher up the corporate ladder, they spend increasing amounts of time and energy in office politics defending their territory and power.

I must work in a strange place.

One of the biggest companies in the US.

Most management promoted from within.

The higher you go up in rank, the more money you make.

Weird stuff apparently.

Actually your post was funny.

I will admit I'm sensitive to the generalizations as I work really hard to care for my team and not lose sight of what's important.

Sorry if I came across too harsh or without a sense of humor. There are some of us who try and care.

I'm not sure it's weird as you described. What would be weird is if the people at the top (generally folks hired from outside) didn't put the people in the middle in impossible situations and then blame them for all problems.

I went into Admin for 2 reasons:

1) My degree is in Public Administration
2) Money, not only while working but increase retirement pay for life

That said, I had a lot more fun and satisfaction as a supervisor....I went from a 4/10 schedule with Fri/Sat/Sun off to working 5 8's.

Admin meant being on salary, on call and being in charge of 3 Divisions withing a City Department. Fun stuff like budgeting, policy making, personnel issues, grant writing, and endless meetings....

Nice to retire at age 52.

+1

We have some fantastic "Team Leads" and Team Supervisor in my company who would lay down their lives to help their team but they are sometimes tasked with asking for the impossible based on SOP that changes more often than the sun rises. To make things more frustrating, if you ask 10 of those people what SOP is, you will get 11 different answers. I have no doubt that the cluelessness comes from people who are far from the front lines (and in reality have never done what we do).

If you work in commissioned sales, you can easily make a ton more than people in mgt., depending on the industry and commission structure. I knew guys in the mortgage biz who made 10x what their branch mgr. made and he even got a piece of everyone's production.

When we were at a different company, my boss once asked me if I was interested in heading into mgt., warning me it'd probably start out at less than I was making then. I laughed and said he could give me any title he wanted, didn't matter to me, but I wasn't taking a pay cut.
