$8k should by a decent 944 and leave +/-$4k left over to fix it up or put in the bank for a rainy day. To me, there's something to be said for galvanized sheetmetal on a daily driver... but then again, I live in FL.
914s are neat but don't they lack some modern creature comforts that would make it livable as a DD... like AC? Not a criticism but actually more of a question... was AC an option in the 914s? |
One of the many 14's I owned had air when I lived in FL. It was an under dash unit that I'm sure wasn't factory, but it has been done. Most P cars I've own A/C was not very good. How about a 928 as a DD?

likes: solid car, good sheetmetal and galvanised. it has outlasted a lot of the competition. nice curvy, simple design. uncluttered. it still looks great against its more modern rivals. decent handling and brakes for an '80s car also. parts isn't so bad if you know where to look. not fast but quick enough- no limiter! turning circle like a figure skater fantastic heater and heated wing mirrors! I love not having a sunroof! dislikes: undertuned. the factory could have made them far better if they weren't already slotted as an entry model. some of the plastics are getting brittle and fragile paint has seen better days i wish some stuff was easier to do, like clutch changes, clutch bleeding (mines a RHD), etc. earlier cars- generally lighter, less options, less complicated in some ways, shares more with the 924 and 924S than the late cars. Some parts are cheaper compared to the later ones. late cars- better HVAC, the dash is simple and modern, late seats are great, especially the sports seats (IIRC the HVAC controls and the seats are the same as the 964. the seats are the same in the 968 until '94 where they then got 993 seats). I prefer the late dash. the car interior breathes better, the heater is fantastic! if i got an early dash 944 i would change it to early '80s 924 turbo interior and gauges from a 924S. As you can see from the pics of 931GT's 931 the 924 had an all black interior and green on black gauges. for my taste it has stood up better to time than the 944's early interior with platnium coloured centre console and gauge surround, and the yellow on black gauges. either way, these cars thrived on being used. park them up for extended periods and its like you're killing their inner child! they respond well to mods from better specced cars/ later models. They respond well to preventative maintenance. if i was to buy for commuting such a distance and i was set on a 944 I would choose an S2 and pray I don't end up on the track with it. |
Given your original post about considering V70 (both R and non Rs) I might suggest looking at the 850R. The V70 picked up the AWD system complete with the power sapping viscous coupling. Back in the 90s my family had an 850R followed by a V70R, and the 850 was much more fun to drive. Sure torque steer is a bit of an issue, but the car just feels more nimble. I had such fond memories of the old 850, I picked one up to by DD. The R's are a bit hard to find, but it is worth the effort for the seats alone. Price range seems to be all over the board, but you can find a very nice example with service history for 4 to 5k.
With that said, a 944 can be a wonderful daily driver. Over the years I have daily driven a 924S, a few 944 Turbos, and a 968. And other than a 951 that was a bit too tracked prepped, they were all solid on the commute. Because you are coming from the turbo charged world of the 965, I might suggest looking at the 951 first. With your budget you could find a very nice 86-88 Turbo (non S). Or, maybe buy both. Nice solid 850R, and a basket case 951. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-b...816_184845.jpg |
I am currently driving my white 85.5 944 with a burgundy interior, and 968 wheels as a DD 55 miles a day round trip with some county roads and some interstate. I have been averaging 27 MPG and get lots of looks everywhere I drive it, and love having a responsive, sports car rather than a boring econobox.
BTW, my Winter daily driver is a 99 F-250 diesel 4x4 |
That Carrera GT replica revived my high school dream of daily driving a CGT replica built off a 924S with a 944 turbo engine and trans. I vaguely remember seeing an article in Excellence about a german man who did that transplant into a 924S and the results are obviously staggering.

Thanks for all of the great comments everyone. I defintiely appreciate it and it gives me a lot to think about.
I sold my '68 Buick SportWagon last weekend so my garage is feeling pretty empty. Bill |
