Chancellorsville
With the 150th anniversary of the Civil War underway I thought I would go down to check out the re-enactment at Chancellorsville where Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded and Stephen Crane was inspired to write the Red Badge of Courage. I was surprised to see the re-enactors far outnumbered the spectators. They actually encamped for the whole weekend in full regalia. They said they were expecting t least 10000 re-enactors for Gettysburg coming up this summer. These are some of my pics.

I love these events..
Have been to the Washingtons Crossing reenactment in the past and to the Battle of Hubbarton reenactment a few time (I have a second home in Hubbarton).. I am amazed at the attention to detail and dedication that the reeanactors bring to these events...

Nothing like the smell of black powder in the morning......
Seriously though, watching and discussing the complete Ken Burns "The Civil War" should be a requirement for ever student graduating high school.

I was at Antietam last year it was pretty well attended. I was going to go to Gettysburg this year, but I suspect it will be a mad house. I enjoy my battlefields with as little crowding as possible. Chancellorsville is just not that known to "civilians".

Between that, the horse manure, the bacon on the cooking fires and the cannon fire it was more authentic than I imagined. Here are two more pics redone in black and white.

The guy on the horse in the first pic looks to be J.E.B. Stuart.

No over weight soldiers in a 19th century infantry army. The worst was in the movie Gettysburg when the 50 -60 year old over weight picket stopped the scout coming into camp, really could not get a more realistic stand in for that scene.
