Cyclist vs Motorcycle

Just got sent this link today. Prime example of target fixation (motor) and unfortunate timing (cycle). Hope the cyclist recovers with minimal effects but I'm sure he's going to be hurting for a while.

I hope that motorcyclist is prevented from ever mounting a bike again. He wasn't going fast enough to even round the turn in that line. Minimal braking - backed off when he had a slight wobble.

Those canyons in Malibu are a nightmare, especially on weekends. Idiots driving and riding too fast to brake in a corner when they see the inevitable bicyclists around the bend, a horrible mix of bicycle/MC/car traffic, etc...

I went on a couple of those group drives back in the day, (maybe 10 years ago now?), and completely swore it off because of what I saw. Accidents are not a matter of if but when.

And there is no excuse for the MC other than the guy can't ride. Unfortunately there is no entrance exam for riding the canyons on a Sunday morning.

Nuts.

I have done miles of training in those hills in my early day of riding by bicycle. There were no one there but a few local residents. Where the heck did all the cars, motorcycles, and bicycles come from. Yea, it is too crowded and they are all going to fast with that many people around.

For once we agree, Denis. I joined only one "tour" of a certain "gruppe"...insanity.
Triple digit speeds over a twisty road that had private driveways exiting among roadside trees...not to mention scaring the krap out of the locals. A kid could have darted out on his bicycle at any time.

This was back when I'd already been considering distancing myself from that set for other reasons...

First of all, before i even start..

WTF were they thinking, letting that guy get up and walk before medics arrived???

I've watched that guys vids before, that turn seems to be a very popular spot for bikes to lose it.
But yeah, that douche has no business being on two wheels.

I agree with you David, target fixation. Look at the video and watch where he is looking going through the curve. He should be looking at the exit out of the curve, instead he is looking at the bicyclist. You tend to go where you are looking.

Had to happen sooner or later.

The photographer didn't get "lucky" with that shot. He has a veritable LIBRARY of vids of wrecks on that road.

RNICKEYMOUSE - YouTube

You couldn't pay me to bicycle on that road.

Double off camber road......there are a few threads on this curve.....it's above the Rock Store. They really should make repairs and limit speeds with a 24/7 video camera. Every asshat in the world wants to take that cirve too fast and show off for the cameras.

That is not off camber. It is flat on the uphill side (if you stay in your lane) and banked on the downhill (slightly). It is one of my favorite turns on car or bike. Let's not go f***ing it up. Yes, I have crashed there on my bike but I consider it an easy turn. The approach is intimidating because it is a long downhill so you get up a lot of speed.

DOC is how it has been described in CHP reports....anyone that knows that road should be wary and not be a tool bag thru there.

Guy is an idiot, but why would the bikers be going 1.4mph through that turn? Lack of self-preservation gene?

A lot of people crash when the bike or car gets light on the uphill entry. The road drops away and that sends many inexperienced bikers into the guardrail. I know to expect it so it hasn't caught me out in the 911, but I can feel that if I came up there full speed and threshold braking, that change in road curvature could send me wide.
