Another great voice silenced — George Jones

RIP. Tammy has been waiting a long time for them to sing together once again.

To every musician who has ever performed in a "warm-up" or "backing" band for 'Possum, I know what you're thinking: "Gee, the gig time just got shorter". RIP George.

First time I heard "He Stopped Loving her Today" was like getting hit with a sledgehammer. That voice and that story collaborated to tell a tale so sorrowful nothing could seem sadder.

RIP, George Jones.

Since '98 she's been waiting!

Their duets were the best and now the angels will hear them sing again.

Thanks Milt...RIP George - and thanks for all the great music.

Pull the head off Elvis, fill Fred up to his pelvis. Hotty Toddy, my friend. RIP George.

I have a good story about him. In the late 70's the town I grew up in was still somewhat small and rural with not much going on. I was in high school, senior year and very much NOT into country. There was this tiny AM radio station on the outskirts of town. They played both types of music: Country AND Western. The stations name: Big"K" radio. Thjey had huge numbers of older dedicated listners and a powerful signal. You could get it in your head if you were wearing eye glasses with metal frames.

Of course George was really hot then and had constant airplay. They were promoting him along with others to appear on a Sunday afternoon as the headliner along with all things a amatuer wrestling match. The show was in a very large and modern (then) country bar. I along with other people my age didn't really care for the music but was interested in HIm because of the 'wild tales' that followed his personal life.

So a bunch of us bought advance tickets and it was a lot of money back then just so we could see him in person. The day comes, we get there and sit through all the 'acts' waiting for GJ to sing. Now the pre-show lasts for like 4 hours. No George. Finally his bus pulls into the parking lot and sits there.

After what seemed like forever it was announced that he wasn't feeling well and would not be able to perform. Didn't even get off of the bus!! So he really earned the nickname "No show Jones"

I listened to part of the celebration this afternoon on Willie's Roadhouse, and XM station. I know this sounds like being an old goat, (I did turn 56 yesterday), but they literally don't make singers like GJ anymore.

RIP George

If they did, it would be someone like Randy Travis and he ain't gettin' any younger. And like Jones, Travis has some demons too.

I hope it's not disrespectful to George putting Travis up here.
