Fiat 500 Abarth Assetto Corse
I really really want this. Only 50 made, so far.
Still in the Mille Miglia Paddock at the Fiera di Brescia, it will be possible to admire and book a truly individual car: the ‘500 Abarth Assetto Corse’, the Abarth baby supersports car that is to be produced in a Limited Edition (49 cars) – and will star in the track competitions from next year, perpetuating the evergreen legend of its famous forerunner, the ‘595 Abarth’, a car created by Fiat and engineered by the mechanical genius of Karl Abarth. In the exhibition area, the public will also be able to admire a historical ‘595 Abarth’ and the new ‘500 Abarth’ that is due to go on sale from next July. My GF had a late '50s Fiat 600. The new Fiats are an eerie reminder of my GF's car. No doubt run better tho.

Burn the fire.

But, will it still break down like its fellow 500s?

As a person who has a penchant for hot hatches, this one is missing the mark. They are trying to tout it as a limited production "super-car" - with a zero to sixty of 7.9 seconds... That's mid-90's cadillac deville territory. But I'll bet it is fun to drive - really fun. If they want to build a super-car hatch, they need to dive in hard, like in the Peugeot. Don't give a half measure. Do the goofy-yet-somehow-charmingly cool wide body and MUCH more power. Oh, and dump the engine into the middle. Build a very fast, small but wide, ridiculously over powered skate board little bad ass. Now you have something that people will want 50 of. angela

I think that front spoiler really helps and the Abarth nose is more extended making look more like a pitbull terrier.
I'd love to do a street legal version of the Assetto Corse. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I liked mine.
1,970 lbs. - 210 hp. Quickest 20 - 100 mph in my life. OMG! Well, not true - my '88 Yam FZR 1000 was quicker. . ![]() . ![]() . . BTW, I like seeing the Fiat 500 around - getting more/more popular.

If you have ever driven a car through the Italian countryside and zig zagged in and out of the small mountain villages you would understand the purpose of this car. Sure their are better, faster cars etc. but 0-60 times blah blah blah are unimportant and unnecessary to enjoy tight twisty roads and the compressed driving environments you will find in Italy. It is no uglier than a Ford Focus or its earlier predecessor. In the United States this car does not make as much sense unless its being driven in city environments where it is easy to park and thread through congested streets.
Ugly or not, slower than a gt3, whatever. It's probably a blast to drive in Abarth flavor on two lane twisties where it can be flicked around corners in a reasonably predictable manner. I will rent a standard version at some point when out of town and treat it like a rental car with the full insurance on top just for $hiz and giggles. If you measure all cars by performance on paper you are sorely missing out on a lot of great cars. Even a beat down diesel rabbit running on 3 cylinders is a blast to drive cause it will teach you to carry your speed and watch your line like a hawk while you stay away from the brakes and try to keep it in the power sweet spot. On paper a car like this sucks even when in top shape but driving it like you don't care is just plain ear to ear smiles. The Fiat might be like a scooter or a fat girl but you can't give a real opinion without a ride. So wear a hat, dark glasses and go rent one while out of town....... The Fiat...... Then come back and tell us about it. |
