I am willing to bet the demographics of the hood in Cleveland where the "House of Horrors" happened, the IQ is way below the national average.

I wonder about that statement, and I'm not sure that I buy that it's as different as you might think. Maybe my understanding/idea of what IQ means is wrong.

I believe that there are folks of all ranges of IQ in all walks of life. I'd bet that you can go into the average inner city hood and find folks with very low levels of education that have a high IQ (to me IQ is a natural ability to think, reason, learn). What you may find in certain areas is very different level of education which, to me, is not necessarily linked to IQ. I suppose it is possible that due to environment (worse nutrition, nurturing, etc...) that there may be a shift, but I wouldn't expect the shift to be that significant.

I think I read that it was in a predominantly Puerto Rican neighborhood. I can't say for sure, but based on a couple of guys that I work with that are from Ohio and some of the information that I've read, I don't think it was an affluent neighborhood. I suspect that he was hinting at it being a poor, primarily minority neighborhood. Of course, that could just mean that it's full of hard working, down to earth folks that don't make a lot of money.

Same as gingers. Perfectly OK to ridicule a group based on their skin color and hair, as long as their skin color isn't brown or black and their hair is red. Then there's cracker. That's OK. Nothing wrong with it. The N word on the other hand is O'fensive. Being PC sure is complicated. |

I don't think skin color has anything to do with IQ, just like education and socio-economic status. Don't confuse me with someone that is PC.

I can also tell you that I have interacted with plenty of Hispanics and minorities here in Houston that most folks would assume were doing the same thing. In my experience, the folks that I've met have usually had 2 and 3 jobs. THe guys that worked in the kitchens of the bars that I used to work in usually had 2-3 gigs and worked 70-100 hrs / week. The guy that is the janitor where I work now, works here, and has a business doing lawns. I suspect he works pretty hard.

Because a lot of folks with very specialist or within very narrow fields often don't operate well outside those - even though they're not stupid. And there's also a wide range of skills/abilities that IQ tests don't even attempt to measure. Quote:

An equivalent "culture-free" (symbols-based) test is usually administered at the same time that removes the language portion/bias - for non-native English speakers, for example. The highest score from either test is then used. For best results, the scale (difficulty) of the selected test should be somewhere near the ballpark of the expected final result - e.g. don't test Mensa candidates (top 1 percentile of the population) with a test intended for sub- or average candidates. Or vice-versa. Opinion is divided as to whether they actually measure anything tangible anyway. There's no guarantee that any individual with a high IQ is going to be successful in either work or school - although they often are.
