Ctrl alt del wtf?

We're thirteen years into the 21st Century and still stuck with CTRL ALT DEL. C'mon Microsft, when are you gonna loose this anachronism? :p :p :p

I mean, they did away with the Start icon, nothing is sacred.

Porsche-O-Phile 05-09-2013 04:07 AM

I think it was (and maybe still is) required by DoD for security.

Jim Richards 05-09-2013 04:10 AM

Like that's really working out for them. ;)

Techically, it was started by IBM. Wiki link: Control-Alt-Delete - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hey - it's better than Control-Flower-Power for Macs! :D

Funny, there's no equivalent with Mainframe or AIX systems...

Its iconic...imagine if a 911 key went on the right side of the column!

Not sure about ZOS or ZVM, but with AIX (and other unices, including Linux) you can control what happens with the 3 finger salute...

On Z/OS, $P will drain all initiators, $Z will halt all initiators and put a hold on all associated resources. But those are just the first couple of steps to the whole IPL process. :D

When I first joined IBM I really chuckled after looking at my company issued laptop and realizing that they had removed the windows button from the keyboard.

I could not agree more. I have an apple at home and put up with windows at work. Leagues apart. The DOS crutch is going to live forever I think.

wdfifteen 05-09-2013 07:11 AM

LOL! Every computer needs a wtf key. That's one standard everyone should be able to agree on.

It is for security when a computer is connected to a network. It is easier to turn off than complain about it.

Quote:

A secure attention key (SAK) is a special key or key combination to be pressed on a computer keyboard before a login screen must be trusted by a user. The operating system kernel, which interacts directly with the hardware, is able to detect whether the secure attention key has been pressed. When this event is detected, the kernel starts the trusted login processing.

The secure attention key is designed to make login spoofing impossible, as the kernel will suspend any program, including those masquerading as the computer's login process, before starting a trustable login operation.

That makes total sense. No software spoof can replicate the physical pressing of three keys.

it will be coming back -- thereby confirming cyclic theories of history

Except VMware, Virtual PC, etc.

What's the problem? Why does it need to change? It's a keyboard shortcut for things that you can do from within Windows most of the time.

It is a combination of keys that are unlikely to be pressed accidentally.

What would you prefer/recommend to replace it?

James Brown 05-09-2013 03:39 PM

how about one of these

Ctrl-Alt-Del isn't normally used to power a machine off, reboot or reset. At least, I haven't used it for that since Win 95 or Win 98.

All of my machines have one of those buttons, and it does something a lot different from Ctrl-Alt-Del.

Maybe what you guys are looking for is the
