Tip the garbageman?

You know, he hasnt spilled a can in two weeks. He also hasnt hit my car in a week. He also has kept the butt odor to a minimum lately.

I feel like he could use a tip. What do you all think is fair?

GH85Carrera 05-09-2013 12:33 PM

The "sanitation engineer" for our city is a city employee driving city owned equipment.

No tip at all from me.

GWN7 05-09-2013 12:34 PM

Cold beer....three guys on the truck? .....Three beers.

GH85Carrera 05-09-2013 12:36 PM

So if they get one beer per block they will be sloshed in a few miles.

Rikao4 05-09-2013 12:46 PM

our guy's hustle..
polite and often quite funny..
they get paid for a full day..
once done with their route..
I see bottles of water /cans of beer often..
they know many the old folk..
so they will go and get the can if need be & return same..
tips around the Holidays..
yes..

Tip the can smashers? Not what I usually do....

I have found articles like this to be kind of helpful on who to tip though.

When To Tip? And How Much?

It seems like more places are building biger tips in to their bills. Not that I don't tip but I like to determine how much myself based on the service. If someone is just doing their job and nothing else... NO GOOD TIP FOR YOU. But the bill in most restaurants now have an 18 or 20% gratuity automatically built in to the tally. Slipshot Sally who spilled the drinks and sneezed on the pasta gets her tip just for doing a bad job.

Seriously... back in the day last garbage pickup before Christmas I would run out and hand them a twelve pack.

Of course I would never be so irresponsible as to do that now ;)

Me and the boys have discussed the practice of garbage man tipping at our monthly happy hour. My point was I have never met not seen the garbage man. I would have no idea who I was tipping, if he deserved a tip or if the proper individual(s) even received my tip.

cashflyer 05-09-2013 02:35 PM

Smack him on the ass, say "Nice job, babe," and get on with your day.

no tip - just leave some long steep pipes in the cans and see if he can hit anything with it

tip him if he takes out your neighbor's Mustang

KevinTodd 05-10-2013 05:11 AM

Yeah....

my tip for the garbage men here would be:

"please stop picking my herbie-curbie up in front of my house and then dropping it off six houses down"

or

"please plug the hole in the back of the truck that drips ass-smelling sludge all over the street in my neighborhood"

or

"please pick up the trash that flies out of the truck while you watch the lift mechanism do all of the work for you"

or....well you get the idea.

end of tip.

We have limits on what we can put in the curb and I always seem to have A LOT of trash that doesn't fit in the cans, scrap lumber, car parts, and other random heavy stuff to throw out. I give my current pickup guys $50 visa prepaid gift cards every year on the last pickup before Christmas. They always pick up everything I put on the curb. Sinks, toilets, piles of soaking wet drywall from remodels, it doesn't matter, they pick it all up. They don't do this for everyone in the neighborhood.

froggert 05-10-2013 06:57 AM

how do you give them the tip? i've never seen my guys in action and don't want to just leave an envelope out there with a big sign.

Shuie 05-10-2013 07:02 AM

I walk out to the curb when I hear the truck, thank them, and then hand it to them.

fast_e_man 05-10-2013 07:13 AM

I threw trash for a summer during college, It's a tough job. On the plus side I furnished the rental house pretty well (for a poor student).

I always take care of Gilberto, my trash man. At least $50 for Christmas + other cash incentives when I have a home remodeling project going on. He takes EVERYTHING I leave. Same story as Shuie, I get preferential treatment - everything disappears and the empty cans are nested neatly.

In my book the trash guys deserve good treatment, I know the kind of disgusting stuff they encounter over the course of a work week.

Zeke 05-10-2013 08:12 AM

We don't see the same guys always. Recycle stuff is handled by a private company. The city guys ram the cans into garage doors in the alley denting them. They leave the goo, hydraulic oil and some trash all along the way. They beat the crap out of the equipment. The recycle guys seem to do the same job with less RPM on the engine and a bit less frantic with the cans. I can tell who's out there just by the noise.

No tips.
