Ever buy something, get it home, and find out it really sucks?

I did that today...and I couldn't be happier!

Bought a Riccar Brilliance vacuum today and am very happy with it so far. The sucker has two motors (one near the bag for primary suction, one in the base to drive the brush/provide extra suction). Our carpeting looks 5 years newer after the first use.

It does use a bag, but after a decade of bagless uprights, I'm done with them. In the bagless vacuums, large amounts of dust would always stay behind in the canister, and their real capacity for dust/debris seemed much lower than the painted line promised if I wanted to maintain suction. That, and I always seemed to make a mess just trying to shake all of the crap out of the canister. I look forward to just being able to toss a bag without drama.

It costs about double what a Dyson runs, but this thing could suck a golf ball through a garden house. The sales material says it moves air at 170 cfm. The frame is metal, the wheel are metal (covered in rubber/plastic), the base plate is metal, the pivots are metal, the brush cylinder is metal. The sucker is supposed to last 20 years, I hope it does.

The thing that struck me the most when we got it home is how it sounds like a hotel vacuum.

Modern Dremels. The old school ones were a LOT better.

wrt the dremels >> yeah the old ones rocked!! > my old one dies on me - I googled about the possible cause of death > found what the part was that gave out > called dremel customer service > ordered a new coupler part > fixed it for like $2.50 [with shipping!!]

You mean like pretty much any car, appliance, tool or article of clothing?

Actually the same goes for the houses themselves that you bring all this crap home to nowadays. Anything built after about 2002 is usually garbage.

So you spent the day sucking up ?

No, I'd rather spend time in a Turkish prison.

I would say the same thing about Illinois wine...

I have an older Riccar that I bought when I first bought my house in 99. I rebuilt the peripheral parts a couple of years ago. I bought it because it was the only vacuum that I could not shake off my hand. It still sucks.

Enjoy yours.
