'Splain this one science guys!

You won’t believe your eyes….. « Richard Wiseman

It's got me baffled....

It's just a relabled can of gravity with a small hole in it.

A strobe light can make the liquid look like it's flowing backwards. Just the right frequency, and blending it in with other cleverly-designed lighting, makes it hard to detect.

Disclaimer: I'm not a scientist and I don't play one on TV.

masraum 05-16-2013 11:17 AM

I didn't get the sound or watch the whole video, but I think the fluid was coming out at regular speed but some sort of strobe light or strobe effect made it look the way it did

wdfifteen 05-16-2013 11:53 AM

You can see the strobe scanning up the cans. Horizontal line of white light.

Hey Sidney, What was your College Major? Scuba Diving? he heh!!!

I loved Physics and calculus in College. My prof even made, designed, and welded his own 2 stroke tuned pipe for a racing Kart.........

the drip answer is simple, really.

RPM's, and out of sync strobe light on a falling edge of the standing wave harmonic makes the drops go backwards............

Or.............In YouTube speak, "this is freakin awesome and whatisupwiththat whatisupwiththat, this is like freakin' Paranormal activity!!!"........

were magic mushrooms involved in this filming?

and why wasn't Wesley wearing his shirt?

mushroom, definitely mushrooms.

Not a strobe. Ultra low frequency sound.

sound or light frequencies, whether strobe or tone, it's all power and wavelength...........

Sent to you from my Crystal Radio.........picking up the energy that surrounds us.........he heh,

I used to listen to Dr Demento on my crystal radio at night while under the covers of my rocket ship bed sheets, sliding the coil along a bar to tune the radeo in........yes I'm "almost" getting old.

stealthn 05-16-2013 07:10 PM

That is cool! Gotta make that

porsche4life 05-16-2013 07:46 PM

Dave, I ruled out strobes when the guy in the vid was rather insistent that it wasn't a strobe...;)

I wondered about the speaker thing, but couldn't see one...

Oh and my major is marketing. The one physics class I had was taught via guy who was about 90 and lectured so quietly that you couldn't hear him... I started just showing up for the tests, made an A btw... ;)

it's less than zero weight oil; should be great for mileage.

regards,
Phil

there are your three credits.

The pyhiscs I took was when I was still pre-pharm, so it was for the science majors. Still a stupid simple class. ;)

rouxroux 05-16-2013 09:55 PM

It's simple....there's a cool collar hidden in one of the cans.;)

fred cook 05-17-2013 02:03 AM

What it is..........

Those are "homing oil bees" returning to the nest!

wdfifteen 05-17-2013 02:36 AM

In the water illusion it is the camera frame rate being synched with the frequency of the movement of the water. A person watching it real time just sees a stream of water being disturbed by the sound waves.
The oil can illusion is a strobe, and you can see the whole effect in real time.
