Gift ideas for a new Fireman

One my best friends is about to graduate from the fire academy and starts a full time position next week. He has defied the odds and become a fire fighter at 39.

I need to get him something cool and under $100 as a graduation gift. Any ideas?

I would PM VINMAN or/and glewis and get their opinions. They were FF and might have some insight on gifts.

We may have other Pelicans that are as well but these 2 come to mind. No offense intended to the others.

I definitely think a fireman knife (sometimes called a rescue knife). Some specific models are designed to be worn in the turnout coat and operated with gloves on.

A favorite is the Gerber Hinderer. It has the usual items (glass breaker, seatbelt cutters, clothes cutter, oxygen tank wrench) that a firefighter would find useful and can be used with gloves on.

About $75.00

I'd suggest a nice high quality multi-tool like a Leatherman or Gerber. I have an engraved Gerber that was a gift to me early on in my firefighting career. Its gotten heavy use over the years.
I know a few guys that have the knife in Hydrockets post. It's not bad, but I feel a multi-tool is more useful.

My brother is a fireman. Actually he just made Chief. His favorite present at Christmas was a bunker gear wallet from Black Helmet Apparel. Made from used bunker gear. -J

Black Helmet makes some nice stuff. I bought one of those wallets, only issue with them is that they are HUGE! But I think they may have downsized them some, I know that was a big complaint with them.
There's tons of FF chotzkes out there you can get.

Just don't get him anything that's gonna make him look like a whacker ( firefighter geek...) to his crew!

If he is into motorcycles, the local Harley Davidson Trinket Store sells FireFighter themes:

If he's new and will have to rove, maybe a nice duffel bag to carry his bunkers.

My nephew graduates the FDNY academy in a few weeks. I think I'll get him a Bunker wallet, pretty cool idea.

Fire Axe Inc..
These are great axes that will last for years, the owner is a fireman for LAFD he takes a lot of pride in his work and customers service, a little over your budget but worth it...maybe a few of his friends can pitch in together.
Vinny has a good suggestion for a really nice Leatherman/Gerber multi-tool also. Congratulations to him, I was 32 when I finally got hired full time so 39 aint too bad..its a long road to get there but worth it. He will have great stories, see so many wonderful things and many tragic ones but its such a great career. Tell him probation is tough but only 12 months...be Johnnie on the spot and go hard thats what the guys like to see.
