take a small glass of water. light a paper match, and let it burn for a few seconds. drop the lit match into the water. sip the water right away. drink it all. dont swallow the match!

100% success for me.

I've used that with success also. Funny how these methods get spread around.

+1 - Works for the majority of folks.

A girl I dated swore nothing ever cured her hiccups. Sugar did immediately.

Put on your used shoes, go for a drive in your E46 with any spoons you may own, hurry back home and have a cup of coffee from your Keurig and then compartmentalize until they go away.

That is pretty specific. :D

OK, here's one that might seem 'off the wall'.

Stand or sit up straight. "ground yourself". Those of you who do Yoga know what I'm talking about, same thing as if you were trying to 'set yourself' for wrestling.

While breathing naturally, take one hand and pass it downward over your chest as if you were slowly trying to brush something off a parka that bulked out a couple of inches from your body. Or you can have someone else do the "brushing"

I don't understand why it works, but it does.

Best
Les

Bingo, Phil. Throw it toward the back of the throat and swallow. Works every single time.

Rickysa 05-22-2013 06:50 AM

Peanut butter...spoonful. 100% success (and I get them often)

scottmandue 05-22-2013 06:52 AM

Also have had luck with holding my breath... hold until you are gasping for air... then slowly as you can breath in through your mouth.

Steve Viegas 05-22-2013 07:32 AM

My older brother always told me to hold my breath for 10 minutes and they would be gone.

Hard-Deck 05-22-2013 10:04 AM

Swallow a spoonfull of bitters. 100% success for me.

gordner 05-22-2013 10:17 AM

My brother discovered an unconventional cure once, and it has worked every time since. Sucks though, since it is best explained as a swift punch to the solar plexus to wind you, works every time! Just not sure it is better than hiccups

McLovin 05-22-2013 10:19 AM

While plugging your ears tightly with your fingers, take a few sips of water.

Works every time!

Squirt a little lemon juice into the back of your throat. Hold it there 15 seconds then swallow.

It appears that anything that distracts you from thinking about having hiccups will work.

gacook 05-22-2013 02:06 PM

I just hold my breath.

Lifestyle and home remedies
By Mayo Clinic staff
Although there's no surefire way to stop hiccups, if you have a bout of hiccups that lasts longer than a few minutes, the following home remedies may provide relief:
Breathe into a paper bag
Gargle with ice water
Hold your breath
Sip cold water

Teaspoon (or tablespoon) of sugar has always worked for me.
It relates to something about absorbing water in the esophagus with following reactions below.

Geronimo '74 05-22-2013 09:06 PM

Massage the 5th vertabrae in your neck (C5).
Hickups will stop almost instantly.
Learned that trick from my chiropractor.

Putting a knife in a glass of water is pretty effective for me. Often I can just visualize a knife in a glass and they stop. Weird.

Tim Hancock 05-23-2013 02:32 AM

Swallowing one to two teaspoons of granulated sugar ALWAYS works or me.
