Wanted: Help making plans for shop mods
 

We moved into our current location over 5.5 years ago and building/safety wants to see a set of plans on where we placed the lifts, and other mods.
Anyone out here that can help us with this?
We need to get them approved once submitted. Willing to trade work/parts

See if you can find out what they are specifically looking for. Might be as simple as making sure a lift isn't blocking a door. If they ask about lighting, tell them it's the way you found it. Same for the restrooms. Ask if they have the previous permits and drawings on file. Hopefully what you can say is close enough to the truth about no changes. They aren't stupid and know what will roll and what won't. It's only the stationary equipment they seem to look at. I don't think the City of VN is going to go all OSHA on you.

There are some ADA things you need to comply with, so get a copy of the code. The city does administer the ADA code.

Most of the time you can do this on 8 1/2 x 11 graph sheets showing anything stationary including interior walls. If the fire dept has been there and is happy with what they see, that helps.

I'm sure you know all about oils, solvents, paints and other flammable materials. The city and the fire dept like to see how those are handled. Outside within a dam or berm is best.

It's been so long since I did these plans that I'm not up to speed. I think it used to be that if there were more than 6 employees, and of both sexes, you had to maintain 2 separate restrooms. They just want to put A and B together and maybe C.

Stay away from lighting plans and have the engineering sheets from the lifts available to show they will sit on your existing floor w/o any additional modifications.

I hope you don't have an engine dyno there (inside). Or a spray booth.

What Zeke said. Now if the town is really a pain it's going to cost you. Ask them if you can do it yourself. If they say no ask them if they have ANY plans that breeze through quickly. If they do ask them to show you one and write the guys name down and pay him!

FWIW, there is no City of VN. They'll be dealing with the City of LA.

Exactly what Milt said. Find out from the city what exactly what they are looking for Dave then go from there. I help a friend draw up a set of plans for his bike shop. All they were looking for was the ADA stuff. Well, for a bike shop? But code is code. Jim, the big and messy one in Pasadena. We go way back.

Could it be that the lifts were installed without pulling permit? IF so, how far down do you have to pour the footing for those things. How fat from the doorway? A friend who own a few industrial buildings just got their automotive repair permits through their city a few weeks ago. I can ask who did the plans and got them approved.

I didn't even think/wonder about that. Good point. Not to take this way OT, but that's what's wrong with Los Angeles. Too big. The Valley should secede.

Won't change the codes though. ADA is federal.

AFA the bike shop goes, people with disabilities use bikes. Alex Zanardi certainly does.
