Ev a/c
what do EV's like the Nissan Leaf and Tesla use for air conditioning?
a lot of air cooled car owners are looking for good a/c, and so are many water-cooled Vanagon owners |
Would a 911 alternator put out enough amps to drive an electric compressor?
|
I believe an electric compressor.
What does that have to do with an air cooled car or water cooled Vanagon? At least on a newer 911 the limitation isn't the compressor, it's the overly convoluted and inefficient system that likes to leak. Lots of people have upgraded the A/C in their Carreras with new lines and condenser(s) but keeping their original compressors and have great A/C. |
the electrics could be mounted up front, near the battery - that would eliminate the overly convoluted and inefficient system and its leaks

I think Griffith has looked into the systems. In the end the old conventional system with his upgrades work great for 911s. I don't think they will work for an old bug or VW camper. ;) |

1HP (746 watts) at 12 volts is 62 amps. I don't know how much one of these electric AC compressors draws, it's just a guess. You could definitely mount an auxiliary alternator where the compressor would be. Of course it's got to be a lot more profitable to sell a bunch of hose upgrades and stuff  |
You still have to put the condenser somewhere, the rear deck lid is the biggest opening on the car. The 911 just doesn't have a lot of openings with airflow through them. As for the rest of it, part of our problem is that our systems are just OLD. Leaky hoses, inefficient and dirty condensers and evaporator, blower fan that basically has only on/off settings, etc. It's not up to modern standards.

Like the Prius, the electric cars have electrically driven compressors. They are 24 volt compressors.
I looked into this for one of the local guys who runs in some of 911 clubs. They were trying to find a way to satisfy new rules requiring cars to have a/c, and wanted to maintain performance. From what I heard, they took a Suzuki compressor (those are tiny compressors) and rigged the system together so that the compressor was driven by one of the half shafts. The best addition to any car equipped with a tube and fin condenser would be to bolt in a parallel flow condenser and add in an auxiliary fan. |
