The injustice of the upgrade
It seems so long ago that you changed my life. My evenings were never the same after you arrived. With you, time became elastic and plastic, I could be where and when I chose, leap forward and back, discover new things I'd never seen. You took me to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, to every World Rally and Formula 1 race. We visited Athens for the 2004 Olympics, bombed down World Cup downhill courses. When I was sick you showed me old Mad About You episodes and in the afternoons you entertained our children with Kim Possible and Avatar. When you fell ill, we healed you, made you bigger and stronger, installing more and larger drives until you held a mighty 3 terabytes. But we loved you too much, worked you too hard, your faithful red light on constantly, filling and refilling your 1,293 hours at SD, and as you labored, you grew slower and slower. Ungrateful, we took to grumbling at your sluggish response, cursed when you asked us "Please wait", complained about you behind your back and then right to your face panel. My eyes wandered to others sleeker and younger. Long nights of lust in my heart, sweaty palms, leering at the beckoning specification lists on the computer screen as you worked loyally in your dark room, and I did the evil thing, I did it, oh I did it. She came in a crisp new box, when you weren't looking she moved onto your table, took your cables and shoved aside your plug, and before you knew what had happened, the deed was done. Ten years of service cast aside, tossed cruelly onto the basement floor, your lights dark and your drives silent forever. Shed a tear for the Tivo Series 2 DVR as it goes the way of all silicon, unthanked and forgotten, to the great landfill in - well, I don't know where our trash goes actually, but anyway you'll be rusting there while I caress the shiny new remote of my Tivo Premiere 4/XL with quad channel recording baby!
