BMW Roundel Opinions needed on BMW R90/6

A friend of mine is selling his R90/6. I think it's a '76 but not positive. 42K miles and I know he's been through the carbs, brakes, and some other stuff and has it running good. He's owned it for a few years. I never thought he'd sell it but saw it today when I was at their business picking up some soil for a project.

Some of the bike doesn't look original. I'm no expert though so feel free to jump in with comments.

Asking $3K.

Here's a few pics....

I had a buddy who had one - but it has been a decade since I saw it last.
That's definitely not the seat I am used to seeing. And how about the mufflers.

$3k is a good price IMHO.

the tank doesn't look like a 76.

three grand isn't too bad though. very desirable cafe racer platform.

Nice looking bike. That seat needs to go! The aftermarket pieces are typical mods, the kickstand, seat, mufflers, etc. and don't add or detract from the price. The bar end mirrors are a nice set of Napoleans. Just looking at that speedometer makes me think those are original miles and not 142K miles.

If that is an OEM BMW fairing, it's worth about $350. I'm not sure that it is, because I can't see the cut outs for the clock and volt meter. Look on the outside of the fairing, just above the headlight, on the plexiglass and see if you can see the BMW part number.

$3000 is a fair asking price. Good running R90's run the gamut of $2500-$3500.

Here is my R75/6 for comparison:

That is a heavily modified bike, including at least:

- Seat + backrest
- Fairing
- Mirrors
- Blinkers
- Mufflers
- Fuel tank (may be wrong on this)
- Sunglasses (j/k)

The bike will cruise quite well at legal speeds but braking will be anemic by modern standards with the ATE front brake (just 1 disk) and rear drum.

The engine looks great (much better than my R100) and the general condition is very good by looking at the pics but tt is too customized for my taste as these bikes look great when left unmolested.

Unless you want it for long distance cruising I'd plan on at least ditching the seat and get one more suited for local driving, such as this.

Hey everyone - thanks for the feedback and pics! I hate that tank - it doesn't look like the original at all and I know that seat is ugly too...and the fairing.

Didn't know about the pipes, blinkers, and mirrors (thanks Paco).

I wonder if he still has the original stuff? It'd be a good question to ask - and I will tomorrow.

I could throw him an offer of $2,500.00 considering the non-original pieces and see what he says. He may let it go for less than $3K although I'm not hot and heavy for the purchase as I still have my VFR Interceptor and only have so much space.

Still - these bikes are collector items so it would probably be a good investment as well as fun bike to ride.

That tank bugs me though...can't be original. Dang....

Pipes and seat are not original. Assuming it has good compression and the carbs arent leaking, I'd do what youre thinking, offer $2500 and see where he goes.

The tank could be original /6. They look way different without the pinstriping. They often have two tanks....the white one has the knee padding, Kurt's does not.

I bought a "lesser" R65 for $2500 seven years ago. Dirt simple to work on, fast enough to have fun but slow enough you don't get beyond "fun" too quickly.

I did a full tear down and paint in my garage. You can see how the tank looks different without the striping. (Skip to page 3)

OK guys......talked to the seller and he is good for a $2,500.00 cash sale.

Also - he has the original seat, saddlebags, tailpipes (said they are rusty), an extra starter, and some other odds and ends....which all go with the bike.

The gas tank is original, BTW.

He said he tested the compression when he bought it and it was good and even on both sides.

Bike runs great - no issues - except front rotor is a tad out of round and you can feel it when braking.

Should I go for it?
