Gasket and RTV advice

I replaced the vanos in my e36. I scraped off the paper gasket from the front the head with a razor blade and installed a new steel gasket with the new vanos. I didn't do a good enough job removing the old material and now it leaks

So lesson learned, I ordered some gasket remover and a plastic scraper and a new oem gasket.

RTV is not called for in the installation.....BUT....is it a good idea to lightly coat some RTV on gasket from the head to the gasket for extra insurance?

I'll really like to get some advice on sealing against leaks b/c I DO NOT want to do this job a 3rd time.

Thx!

The two mating surfaces have to be absolutely clean and smooth to prevent leaks, as you have discovered. Just do it right the second time around.

i'm a little worried i marred the surface with the blades. Will a few scratches in the aluminum cause a leak?

A flexible gasket will be okay with shallower scratches. Persoanlly I like non hardening type sealants like Hylomar for these applications.

If the steel gasket is rubber coated or has a rubber foam, it does not need RTV.

I do these all the time.

Make sure the surfaces are really clean and coat the gaskets lightly with hylomar.

Also, don't forget a little dab of hylomar on the seams where it meet the cylinder head before you replace the valve cover.

Unstead of steel, I've used a brass scraper followed by a nylon roll-lock on a drill (sends chunks everywhere though). A little softer.
